I have no idea what Newhouse is peddling these days.Journalists work for clicks, you’re taught early on in Newhouse that weaseling around “off the record” is key for good sound bites/quotes
Nothing is “off the record” unless you’re protecting a source
But it is not true that nothing is "off the record" unless it involves protecting a source...even for those of us working primarily for old school decaying media.
If I ask if we can go off the record (which has almost never happened) or if the interviewee asks AND I AGREE then something is off the record and I will not use it without first getting the source's ok or getting the info from another source.
If a source merely says "off the record" and keeps talking...that's not off the record.
I've got to agree to do it.
I'll usually point that out.
Also...many times a source may ask to go off the record when in fact all he or she really wants is that the information not be attributed to him/her.
