Postgame thoughts... WVU (NCAAT)

This is crazy! A couple weeks ago not knowing if we were in or not to the Sweet 16. I couldn't believe when JB put Merek back in there with less than a minute to go in the first half and he picked up his 3rd foul. Merek did an excellent job not picking up his 5th playing 10-12 minutes to close out the game. This team goes as Merek goes...and of course as Buddy shoots it! Houston is a beatable team and they don't know the zone...get get it boys!

we are 20 mins away from playing rutgers in the sweet 16. let that sink in.

Rutgers gave Houston a great game, but I'd rather play someone who hasn't seen the zone already this year.

Plus that guy with the hip problem, Jarreau, is probably going to have a rough week. He played the whole game limping around, and probably did himself more damage.

Easier to keep playing on adrenaline then to start from scratch.

JB finally put Kadary in, and he responded on the inboards play by dribbling it up along te sideline to break the WVA press. I really thought that was a key play.

in the post game presser JB said it was the biggest play of the game because we only had 5 secs on the clock to get it across mid court.

One time playing hoops when I was fresh out of college, I broke my ankle in a full court game. Kept playing on it for about 10 minutes on adrenaline before it just hurt too much to go on. Then, I spent the rest of the summer learning how to drive a standard transmission with a cast on my "clutch" foot.

By his definition, everyone is inconsequential.
But, hey, that's the sentiment i would expect. I would prefer, though, that it be conveyed with a modicum of grace.
In the words of Thomas DeQuincy, one day we all “join the majority.”

Kadary. He made two big plays late...but let’s not overlook the fact that he looked shaky on 2 straight possessions that caused JB to yank him down the stretch. 2 turnovers. Both led to WVU run outs.

JBs rotations have become much more pure productivity based in the past 3 weeks.

AG gets a chance to show...if not we get Bras.

Jesse gets run.

We even saw him sit a not so hot Buddy out of the normal rest sequence in the first half.

no issues with JB the last 3 weeks of the season.

I think that is all any of us were asking for earlier in the season. If a guy isn't producing, take him out and give someone else an opportunity. Coach the player up and get him back out if/when needed. I grew up watching SU basketball, and that has always been the way.

Boeheim's most impressive coaching achievements are those that are not under the big lights.

What he was able to achieve in practice after his team had been embarrassed by Pitt, UVA, Clemson, has got to be considered something close to a Coaching Miracle. From those days of blowout losses, JB was able to coach away the mistakes that were killing them, and make them believe in their ability to put it all together.

The Huge Irony: at the very time when his arm-chair critics were condemning his coaching inadequacies [as they perceived them] suggesting he should retire, he was coaching the hell out of his team, turning them into the Powerful Force that you saw today.

So whose perceptions of the teams strengths vs weaknesses back then were more accurate?

Boeheim's?
Or his critics?
the team finished last year trouncing UNC...and had everyone back sans Hughes (big loss) but had his replacement in AG...

But it was like they started from scratch...which was puzzling. Yeah the COVID did them in ...taking away 40 days of practice time that they badly needed.

I think it is clear that those pauses did a lot of damage...just barely not enough to kill the season...but they got as close to the brink as possible.

In hindsight, a lot of the things people were calling for ended up coming to pass and ahve worked charms...so...yeah...it was a grind of a season...that somehow worked out in the end...but only barely...by the slimmest of margins possible.

But with no Sidibe.

yeah that was huge too...they really counted on him this year.

I think they are gonna need another big if they keep playing in this tourney...they needed one today at the end.

Jarreau got the hip injury when a Rutgers player "backed into him" conveniently throwing an elbow while doing so. Just a cheap shot and should have been tossed.

I'll read through the thread in the AM (when I wake up at 5:30 and can't sleep), but this has been a really fun weekend for an SU hoops fan who only got to see about 3 games before this. No matter what else happens, two wins in the tourney and a sweet 16 spot for a middle-of-the-pack team has been a real treat. I'm gonna wear my Syracuse gear all week, and people will ask, "Where's that?" Haha!

Let's go get Houston. Screw you, Kelvin Sampson you freaking crook.

I'd have to go back and watch the end, but JB may have initially wanted to keep his best FT shooters o the floor (Braswell and Girard), until it became apparent that we really needed a better ball handler to break their press.

True Grit. Team played through Buddy being off and Marek foul trouble. Q was so tough he is the unsung hero of this team. Great motor and leadership. This might be the most satisfying Sweet 16 since i started following SU over 50 years ago as it has brought great joy to my 87 going on 27 year old Dad.
We have watched both games together long distance and the experience has been pure magic.
Lets keep this train rolling. What a win. What an amazing effort!
Go Orange!!
