Potential 2024 Roster

If Cuse can solve the fogo issue (after all, possession is king), Gait might allow more fast breaks and freelancing by athletic guys like Aviles. Would love to see it.

Aviles's fast break goal, 2nd game vs UNC, literally had me up out of chair!

Yeah this is key. I can think of at least one instance when the defense played for an extended possession, probably over two minutes, they get a stop and the d-middie clears the ball and takes an I’ll advised shot, which is saved and the team is back to where they started.

When you are winning under 50% of faceoffs against top 10 teams every possession is so important. Do you want Joey Spallina taking a shot or a d middie when you only have so many chances? I’m sure with more possessions the coaches will be much more comfortable taking shots in transition.

Exactly. Not making or breaking team success if Dmids score goals. Possession is key. I believe our offense was 7th in efficiency. You prove yourself in practice. Clearly the DMs didn’t prove they could consistently make the correct decisions in practice.

Yes that was an bad shot but when u push transition and steal a few goals u can take the wind out of a team. U do it when it's there like most teams do. Notre Dame did it to us and in two mins we're up 3 goals. If u notice our SSDMs all season and last yr dump it and get off. A few times the end of season Aviles did it. Yeah I have no issues with Avliles pushing the ball and trying to score he had the talent. Also when u get ur DMs right off u give the other team a chance to get there guys on. Now again most of the time I do that but once in a while u push it and catch there O mid stuck on the field covering someone like Aviles. I like Aviles vs an O kid who can't play D as much as Joey against the number 1 pole. Especially losing face offs u need to steal goals. Maybe we beat Duke and it don't go to OT if we pushed it more and scored or Hopkins. U can't go off one bad decision a DM made.

Petro never let DMs push transition even at Hopkins. Aviles can play offense cmonn guys. U wanna say ok the others shouldn't fine but to not let Aviles push transitions to me it's ridiculous. I like Petro I'm just saying I think he needs to change with the times some. U can have an efficient offense and still push the ball look at Virginia. They do it a lot as does Notre Dame. They love there offense too but know it's part of the game and takes the wind out of teams. Obviously difference of opinions but I do feel Aviles wants to be a two way and should be which is why this all came up.

Maryland had the best offense in college last yr maybe ever yet there DMs pushed the ball at times when it was there. Just made them even more powerful. It's part of the game. If u have guys that can do it then they should get the green light. Aviles to me should get the green light. Not slow it down dump it off every single time. If it's open man take it.

Right AD31! Get a solid fogo(s) and unleash Aviles

Ummmm...

Man if Pederson isn't looking to play football they need to free up more NIL money and get that kid to join his teammates at SU. He would be so huge of a pickup.

I know it's to late now. We will probably watch him kill it next yr in transitions at Georgetown
He really impressed me over the summer for team PR. I knew he was nasty on offense in HS but when I saw him play offense last summer in the world games man he looked good. I bet him playing offense again made him want to be a two way. He's someone with the ability to do that for sure. I wish him luck I hope he enjoys his final yr.

What’s the chances we land Eldridge ?

I would say pretty slim? SU doesn’t get a lot of kids from Georgetown Prep, David Lipka and a LSM who transferred to Maryland are the only two I can think of recently. I would think Georgetown would be the early guess as they are losing James Reilly after the season.

Beggars can’t be choosers, but fingers crossed SU can bring in someone more established. Eldridge was under 50% last year which would put us in a similar situation to last year.

Kind of interesting that this makes back to back years that the number one ranked fogo has entered the portal. Chase Mullins from UNC to Penn State last year. Such a difficult position to predict.

Its not like we always immediately rushed them off the field. If there was a true unsettled opportunity they did have the green light. It was just a question of if you want to keep a guy like Aviles out there to dodge against someone who just came down the field with him. I think a bigger factor there is the fact we only fully trusted 4 guys for both ssdm and the wing. Thats a ton of fatigue already. Extended time on offense only adds to that. Its not like we would send them off the field even if we had numbers. Even the teams that supposedly push transition rarely have a guy who will stay out there after the initial attempt to push it goes nowhere.

I complained earlier in the season that they were not taking advantage of having a goalie who makes a lot of clean saves and I stand by that. Not sure if it's a Petro thing or not but watching a bunch of games this past weekend, and seeing so many teams hitting a shorty hedging up outside the restraining box to push the ball up the field and get fast break opportunities is certainly something this team should be doing. If Gait truly wants to get back to the style he says he wants to I would assume it would start with pushing the ball in transition way more. To your point about guys staying on the offensive side of the field I think the team can better utilize creating transition without wearing out any of those guys, plenty of other teams do it.

Virginia lets its FOGO dodge from X and it’ll keep a pole down in the slot. Lars really lets all of his kids play, not just the cool kids down on the offensive end. Carc often talks about practices in the 90s where balls were flying everywhere to get and keep transition going. That has been lost, even with the new regime.

"Rarely." Not saying it never happens. But that is an extremely uncommon example in today's game. I think our level of transition is far down the list of problems. You push when you have numbers. If you dont have numbers then I dont think it is wrong to get those guys out and get the offense rolling. Lars puts more emphasis on pushing the ball in transition and quick clears. I would like to see more of that from Petro and co, but it also depends on who you have as personnel. Thought we saw more transition last year with Olexo and Clary at LSM. Rarely does "pushing transition" mean long poles and ssdms staying out and dodging after it is already a 6v6 situation. Outside of the occasional action with Lasalla on a face off, lars brings out the offense when there is nothing unsettled.

It’s blasphemous for a lacrosse coach who doesn’t push transition. Man advantages in unsettled situations are easy goals.

There are two things in lacrosse that should get you burned at the stake. Not pushing transition and playing zone.

not happening

You weren't around for 1990 I take it.

That was 1990 but in 2021 and 2022 and heck even this yr Dante Trader does it and did it twice against us.
Trader's stats on the year are nearly identical to Olexo. He would have more points than Trader if we did not have him playing close towards the end of the season. We push when we have the opportunity. Tone on some of these posts is acting like we don't EVER try and score in transition. It is just not true.

We could do a better job of getting the ball out quick after a save and being aggressive when clearing to create more opportunities. But it is not crazy to rotate in the offense when we do not have anything unsettled to work with. If there is an opportunity to score in transition we take it. Murphy had an open shot in transition against MD. He took it and scored.

It did hurt the transition game when Olexo had to move to close D. He's a weapon and hopefully next yr he can stay at LSM. They had to move him this yr with injuries but man he's a weapon. Yeah him and a guy like Aviles could really steal some easy goals which can make the difference in a close game like the 1st Duke or even the Hopkins game. Maybe if we scored a few easy ones in transition we beat Duke and watching SU play this wknd. U can win games by doing it. If they can grab someone who has offensive skill it's worth pushing it a few times a game. I just know Petro is more into slowing the game down and rather his DMs dump it off and get off. I remember back around 2007 - 2008 Hopkins had this ridiculous athletic kid Andrew Miller who I coached agajnst as he was a sick RB and Lax player. As a freshman he was on the first mid line with Paul Rabil. They had an injury game 3 and moved him back to DM. He ended up staying there his whole career and never scored another goal after his first few games because they never pushed the ball. He didn't have many GBs or CTs too which shocked me. I loved watching Petro play in his day and he's obviously a great coach but he's very conservative. I just wish he will change a little with the times and be more open to pushing the ball. I guarantee Gait would be all for it but he's very laid back. I just feel it takes the wind out of a team and also fires up ur team. U can score then bang play solid D get the ball back push it and bang score again. That's tough on a team like what ND did to us after they called no goal. Was bang bang push it push it. We went from being up a goal to down 5 in a matter of mins. Some of us would just like to see them push it more next yr. Be better at face offs, better defense and better in our transition game. Is that asking much ? Lol
