Preemptive Bring Back 44 Thread

So, veto power for someone who assaulted women? Nice messaging.
Pure ego to be against someone else wearing it.
The number’s been retired for 20 years. The last time an iconic type player wore it was about 60 years ago. That’s also how long it’s been since it was passed down between great players.

The only people that see it as a recruiting tool are diehards on this board.

It doesn’t matter who has a say. The gimmick of unretiring the number is lame.

Also, you’re the second person to post this without understanding the irony of your statement.

We need a tradition whether it’s 44 or not. “Our House” was fun while it lasted. Not key jingles or anything lame. I think if anyone can inject some kind of anything into the program it’ll be Fran and co

So basically it’s a fake, irrelevant tradition at this point - and the only way to make it actually significant would be to unretire the number and have some higher end players wearing it. I think your argument works better for unretiring the number, honestly.

(I generally agree it’s a largely irrelevant tradition, in my conversations with SEC or Big Ten fans I’ve never run across one who had any idea of the “significance” of 44 at Syracuse. It may get brought up as a throwaway line in games on TV - but it has absolutely no resonance nationally.)

Yeah, it's dead. I'm not really concerned if traditions are known outside the fanbase though. That happens if your team becomes a player nationally. I would love to see it revived just for our fanbase. We have so little that connects the present to our past. This could be one. And I don't think it has tombe worn every year. But getting a worthy guy to wear it once or twice a decade gets/keeps it going.

It should go to an upperclassmen who has earned it, just as they get the single digit numbers. The old tradition no longer applies, but it needs to be on the field.

Running backs are undervalued I think anyone who puts up an excellent season here and sticks around vs portal or NFL deserves it. We can’t officially become Running Back U again if we have some meathead fullback holding the tradition hostage and undermining our new coach while trying to remain relevant.

LQA and Tucker weren’t old enough to leave for the NFL after their second seasons both are worthy in their third.

I want Allen to wear it this year simply for the optics that HCFB didn’t do a Dieon Sanders and gut the roster even if we have a ton of inevitable turnover. Along with the racist BS he was subjected to by that trash student advisory board.

I like the idea of LA wearing it. He earned it this year for sure.

I don’t really agree with this. The 44 tradition has been debated ad nauseam on this board. If anyone is sick of it, we are. The casual fan just sees the number everywhere with a minimal understanding of the history. They could easily be sold on the “event” of bringing back a tradition. They don’t debate it, so they are more open minded about it. As someone above said, if JW and HCFB th ink they can sell it, bring it back. It will be news, and the casual fan will get behind it. They just need to be led along.

Bringing it back opens the possibility to teach the younger fans about it. I'm not old enough to have been around for 3 great ones, but watching Owens, Richardson, and Konrad wear it made me want to learn about them.

Just make sure you don’t meet Owens in the street and then your brain turns to mush and you forget every awesome thing about him til you walk away. I’ll cringe at that laying in bed for the rest of my life :(

The three main 44's are all now dead. Doubt their family would give the blessing to un-retire the number.

Daryl Gross gave them the lifetime Carrier agreement?

Probably sold an extra 44 seats to the USF game in 2005 from the promotion.

I just posted this on the Rob K thread. "44" could be used also as an NIL tool. Add a "44" fund to our current NIL. All funds have "44" somewhere in the amount. It is a huge branding opportunity. Years ago I put together a proposal that Gedney took to Dr. he who should not be named, and they considered it seriously, but decided it was too geared to football and did not represent the "brand" of all SU sports.
Now it is used so much more than before by SU and it is a huge branding opportunity, and the legend of "44" should be born again, and a player should get to earn it. So much hype can be put here. We need hype. We have hype with the new coach. Now grow a brand and more hype.
