The philosophy made him not good enough to play QB under Leach. Did all their QBs get switched to WR?
Last year, they brought in a grad transfer and then switched to a true freshman. So maybe?

I think we can win the games that are slug fests. We will get into trouble if we get into a situation where we need to drive the ball quickly. 2 minute drills or down a couple TDs in the 4th. Luckily the ACC stinks and I think rock fights are going to be fairly common.
Agree 100%, we have to make these games a grind it out style or we have no chance, no way we can get into a shootout with our current personal. My main concern is later in the year when Tuck isn’t as fresh as he is now and we find ourselves in 3rd and 7,8,9 how do we convert? how do we sustain drives? we can’t run Tucker on 3rd and long and expect to pick it up against ACC defenses, while at the same time we can’t expect GS to be able to consistently pick up those 1st downs with his arm. our QB gives us zero room for error on early downs, we need to get into 3rd and short virtually everytime or we have no chance of converting.

If we're needing to drive the ball quickly, like in the final two minutes of the game, it probably doesn't matter a lot if it's Shrader or Devito at QB.
SU's hurry up offense does not feature much hurrying.

Of course the intangibles aren’t there, his pocket awareness and his vision are some of the worst i’ve seen. He has a golden arm with the football IQ of a walnut and the situational awareness of hellen keller, there’s no denying that. My issue here is there seems to be people on this board who think GS’s arm isn’t an issue and he can lead us to more than 6 wins. when the reality of it is we’re going to be lucky if we get to 6 with our current blend of QB play and play calling. You can’t win in the ACC with absolutely zero threat of pushing the ball down the field and GS has shown no reason for these defensive coordinators to respect his ability to move the ball down the field.
Agree but can we give him more than one real game as the starter before we pass judgment. Remember he has been splitting reps all season and camp. This was his first game in over 18 months where he started and got to play the whole game. Now if Saturday comes around and he cannot make those throws and we cannot move the ball than it’s points well taken. However if he can make the short and intermediate throws with accuracy and move the chains and score I’m okay with him continuing to be qb1.

I’ll be more than okay with him as QB1 if he can make those throws. We don’t need an explosive offense we just need an efficient one. I have my doubts but we’ll see on saturday, hoping to be wrong obviously.

I think there might be an underlying factor with Shrader. I think the team has faith in him and his toughness. He has the respect of the locker room and that’s important. No inside knowledge. Just a hunch.

What does basketball strength and conditioning coaches hurting basketball shooting have anything to do with Schrader?
Both involve arm mechanics

I think we will have to scratch and claw to possibly get to 6 wins. His throwing motion and form can be worked on in the off-season. That can help with next season and beyond.

If I hear one more “Leach converted GS to WR” comment I am going to vomit. GS is a running QB first and foremost, he is not an air raid QB, period. Doesn’t make him a crappy QB.
I saw the source of the comment and just ignored it as the usual.

There’s also this strange assumption that what we see now is GS’s ceiling and he has 0 room to improve reading some of these comments.

yep, but, well, yes, he's not an air raid qb nor a potential NFL qb due to his skill set, and you're right it doesn't make him a crappy qb as it pertains how he can be a good qb in the right system at more colleges than not.

yep much like the supposed "professionals" who said we'd struggle to win three ALL YEAR whom I can't wait to troll, same here, when GS puts up some good numbers there gonna be some trolling and comeuppances occurring on the good ole syracusefan.com site!

It's an interesting stat. Here are the end of season stat comparisons for 2013 Dak vs. 2019 Shrader:

Shrader:
88-153 (57.5%) for 1,170 yards, 8 TD's and 5 INT's
113 rush attempts for 587 yards and 6 TD's

Dak:
156-267 (58.4%) for 1,940 yards, 10 TD's and 7 INT's
134 rush attempts for 829 yards and 13 TD's (also had two receiving TD's)
So if the numbers are carried out to Dak's attempts ...% completion about the same.
GS ends up with 2074 yds. passing. 14 touchdowns...9 inteceptions. Dak's the better runner.
i'm a few beers in so hopefully these end numbers are closer. just want to see this guy get a chance.

Only Tommy can get better, in year 5, but not GS, nope
I was thinking about it earlier how coaches always say the biggest improvement is from week 1 to week 2 in a college football season. Really excited that could hold true for shrader. Start wise…. This is week 1 to week 2 week for him!

For those saying GS can't throw I'd suggest watching this, it has nearly everyone of his plays passing or throwing the ball, also keep in mind this is as a true freshman in the SEC. He's far from perfect but he will be nothing less than an adequate thrower of the football with some room to improve. He might not be perfect but I'd be shocked if this team doesn't end up with 5 or 6 wins when the season ends with him at the helm.

Lots of good and bad in that. But exciting he his and he can tuck and run…

Technically, Helen Keller accomplishing what she did in life despite being blind and deaf probably means her situational awareness is in like the 99.9999999999th percentile of all human beings who ever lived. But I digress.
Shhhhh

Only the QB that’s been playing in the system the longest can get better

a) I will be putting sugar on my crow and will happily swallow it down if he puts up some good numbers.

b) just to reiterate my points. both QBs are flawed. We’ll need both. I will be as amped as anyone if we can get to 6. I expect GS to continue to get better, as long as the OL continues to get better
