Great job by Bullough switching to almost exclusive press man coverage. The first 2 drives CMU moved the ball down the field with Cuse playing their soft cover 2. After that he seemed to realize his db's had the advantage against their wr's and went to press man while sending at least 2 of the LB's on almost every snap. Nice adjustment. There was no way CMU's wr's were going to beat us.

Agree. I thought Reddish would be a lot better by this point. Hope we see some improvement.

See I don't think it's the cb's fault. When they are getting passes completed against them it's almost exclusively when we are in some sort of zone and the receiver has a big cushion. They are pretty good in straight man.

Sure, but you can't win if they play that loose in zone. We will just give up too much chunk yardage against a good passing attack. Shafer used to play some match-up zones that worked better. It just seems like we are willing to wait until the field shrinks in the red zone. Drives me nuts.

I think that's more on the DC then the cb's though. Just look at how they did when they were in almost exclusive man from the 2nd quarter on.

No idea for the life of me why CMU didn't run any type of screen or bubble pass against our constant blitz. The blitz was killing them, but we know we're pretty good against pocket passers. We need to get better against mobile QB's. Good day from the D though, they made plays.

Except for Jesse Kroll, of course, who looked like Tyler Eifert against us --- 5 receptions for 86 yards, and a 17+ per catch average. In a closer game he would have given us fits ... our secondary got bailed out by the D-Line, and lots of LB blitzing, or Kroll would have done more damage.

I know he had that one big catch in the 2nd half over Morgan, despite good coverage, but i'd like to know how many of those catches/yards came after 1st quarter.

But like Clev04 said we know we can stop run oriented teams with a immobile qb. We need to show we can make adjustments to stop those mobile qb's, and spread offenses. Personally i'd like to see more press man coverage. imo that's where we are at our best.

I'm not sold yet on the DBs ability to cover, but I agree they did look better today in press coverage, and they do seem to play better in man.

They have not faced a lot of speed yet this year. Starting next week, they are going to see WR with speed and playing making every week. It will be interesting to see how they hold up. I think Bullough will continue to send the house. I hope that they will continue to use press coverage and just take their chances that the rush will get there.

I just want to point out how disgustingly good Crume has been so far this year. No he isn't Jay Bromley but damn has he been great for us in the middle, and a nonstop motor in the pass rush, I know he forced the fumble on the scoop and score, but I'm pretty sure he had another effort sack as well.

I think expectations were kind of unfair there. Everybody talked about Reddish being this great shut down corner pretty much as soon as he started playing. He's solid, but shut down corners are a rare animal.

I saw basically the same D as last week except this time CMU's qb was too slow to evade the rush. When he could he usually had guys pretty wide open. Glad we won but I don't know how this translates to playing a better team. Plan A is blitz every play and there seems to be no plan B. If CMU had thrown some screen passes I don't know what would happen.

We needed the win and I am glad we got it but I am still very concerned about the D. This game could be a mirage.

He plays really conservative, especially when were in a zone. He gets a lot of passes completed in front of him, but I can't recall too many occasions where he has been beaten 1 on 1 over the top.

Agreed. The Syracuse Defense owned this game. After the first series, the Chips didn't know what hit them. Loved the pressure and the contain - this is the defense I was expecting to see week 1. Great job and hope to see a lot more of it.
