I was admittedly a little bit drunk last night, so some of these thoughts might be a tad off.

PROS:

Jamal Custis Sighting - looks like we may have found this years version of Etta-Tawo/Ishmael. He doesn’t need a lot of room to be open due to his ridiculous wingspan. He also showed some wiggle after the catch.

Interior Run Game - Was vastly improved, IMO. I finally saw the beginnings of that interior trap game that makes this offense so dangerous (more on that later). It’s a staple of this type of offense and potentially allows the whole thing to open up.

Ryan Guthrie and Whitner - better than I expected, IMO. Guthrie got caught inside on one of the long runs, but other than that was solid. Same goes for Whitner, who was far better than imagined.

Eric Dungey - he is Babers’ version of Tim Tebow. He isn’t the most accurate passer in the world, doesn’t have the best arm in the world, and probably doesn’t run faster than a 4.75 forty. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player at Syracuse do what he does.

That stiff arm of WMU’s linebacker is all you need to know about him. His running and improvisational abilities make it extremely hard for a defensive coordinator to gameplan for (more on that too)

Cons:

WR Group - remember the pros about the interior run game? Well, this is the other aspect of that. I fear that defenses are going to put safeties in the box all year to stop our running attack, much like WMU did. Outside of Custis, I’m not sure Riley or Butler can make a coordinator pay for creeping up there.

It also hurts our screen game a bunch as well, because defensive backs can sit right on it. This is something to keep an eye on as the season progresses. If I had to bet on it, one of the freshman or either Johnson will be getting a lot of run by mid season. Butler had two bad drops, and also flattened a deep route out that caused for a missed deep ball from Dungey.

Vanilla Gameplan on Both Sides of the Ball — We literally showed nothing on defense.

For the life of me, we essentially played either a 4-3 with cover 3 or cover 1 behind that front, and when we went nickel it was the same. I don’t really recall any blitzes being dialed up or stunting on the front line.

Our safeties are too green right now, and they probably should be by all means. We have a sophomore and freshman back there. We are going to have to generate pressure this season, and even though the DL is improved, it isn’t exactly Clemson’s front here.

The Entire DeVito Debacle —

I’m not going to beat a dead horse here, but I probably will kick it a few times. IMO, it wasn’t fair for Eric or Tommy. Eric had us rolling and should have had the right to put the game 100 percent out of hand before turning the reigns over to the back up QB.

For the life of me, Tommy should have never been stuck in there for 5 series or so while WMU made a comeback. It placed too much pressure on the entire team - the defense pressed while the offense remained stagnant.

WMU took away our running game and TD and the receivers did nothing to make them pay for it. Makes me nervous.

Finally, Tommy did very little to relieve my expressed concerns about his game. He has all the tools to be great, but the knock on him has been that he plays a little differently when the lights go on.

That hit piece on Dungey (the whole 7 vs 7 comment that was made) may be true. His production at Bosco didn’t match the tools seen in camps or on the summer circuit. It was chalked up to a really young offensive line at the program.

Again, I want the kid to be the best that has ever played here, but right now there is zero QB controversy. We may see one next year between Amie and TD though.

Other Things:

- Hey, we got the win and truly dominated 3 out of the four quarters. If ED was pulled after the third quarter and we were up 55-24 but the score finished the same way, we’d probably feel better about things.

- Lester and WMU are going to be tough to beat in the MAC if everyone stays healthy. They have some really good players in O. I bet Babers would kill to have Eskeridge and Bellamy in Orange. They are excellent football players who gave USC fits last year.

I think Lester is a great coach and great person. Rooting for him the entire rest of the year.

- We got the damn win on the road against a decent opponent. We should be 2-0 at this point next week. No MTSU stubbed toe here.

Well said CIL. Not sure what my personal thoughts were on the TD situation, but I do think Babers explained his thinking in his presser. He offered that he thought the game was stable at 34-7. He then said that he wanted to see if when adversity struck we could get out of it without ED. Probably not what I would have done but I’m less of a risk taker. ED is definitely effective but as others have said he certainly doesn’t run through his progressions as well as I’m sure Dino wants him too. That said, the kid is so effective in how he does play, it’s tough to pull him. Finally he plays so physical you have to prepare for him to get beat up. Tough situation to manage. Hope TD gains some confidence next week.

What does that even mean and how the heck do you know that? I saw 4-3 and Nickel defense, man and zone. We had a few blitzes but primarily relied on our DLine to get the rush - which was entirely based on Babers impressions that the DLine was improved (as he mentioned during Summer camp). We adjusted to motions, used slants and even dropped our linebackers into coverage at times. What else do we want on D?

Good post.
I don't know if the DeVito debacle was fair, but it sure was revealing. Dungey is the vital cog in this offense. When Maloney had to step in for Dungey, he made some things happen, some of the time (Pitt in 2016, first half of the Wake game in 2017). Have to wonder if DeVito is the best we have in the bullpen -- scary.
WR group -- Dino was supposed to be good at bringing in WRs and scheming to make a passing offense go. I still have faith, but the only receivers who did anything yesterday were guys he inherited. Need to get some of Dino's kids into the mix.
DBs -- maybe the WMU receivers were just that fast and that effective. Foster played well. Some of the others got a workout chasing the WMU guys. We have McCloud and Monroe (and presumably Ward) overseeing the secondary -- they better come up with some answers.

Regarding Devito, with some actual protection I'd expect the passes to Strickland and Custis to be the norm and not the expection. You think 5 series in his first game where he made those two throws and a couple ofof plus 10 runs = scary?

Nickel and a 4-3 are just personnel...very vanilla coverage schemes (you can change up looks like a cover 2 shell but actually play man, etc). We showed our ha d every time.

You can also stunt the DL or run some zone blitzes. I saw very little of that.

Yeah, he definitely pressed, but he had some moments. I came out of it believing DeVito's talent is for real, he just didn't put the performance together yet. I'm a lot more confident in a guy with talent being able to do that though. We're going to see some great things from him when it all comes together.

Anyone comparing him to Austin Wilson is an idiot.

Thanks for the post, good insight. Didn't really know about the DeVito "lights" concern that was out there from Bosco days. Hope he learns from this game and makes adjustments, because the ACC is only going to be a faster pace.

He made a couple really nice throws on the money, but the one thing that caused me concern was his lack of awareness in the pocket. Again, could be a freshman not processing things quickly but we can't afford to be in 2nd and 17 very often.

We were 0 and 21 against WMU while DeVito was in the game. Pulled him, the ship righted. Not DeVito's fault about the sieve defense, obviously, but yes, scary to think what happens to this season if Dungey goes down.

A couple of additional random things that stood out to me:

The Kleinberg Elmore blocking package seemed effective. Both guys seem to love to stick people.

Seemed to me that Adams was very aggressive while he was in , and revels in finishing blocks.

Cisco took some bad angles, but will learn. Although he didn't see ACC players, he certainly saw ACC speed. This game will help him down the road.

I did not like D. Butler's body language in general. Seemed almost disheartened.

It's going to be very hard to keep Trill off the field.

Finally, no expert here for sure. Did A Robinson miss an assignment on the QB touchdown run.?
