PS: Steven Clark is proof the new Syracuse football strength staff is yielding results

I don't claim to know anything about strength. The strength of these guys is mind boggling. but my guess is that we hit a point of diminishing returns sooner than a lot of players and strength coaches might want - hitting PRs and getting huge is fun for them. but i always go back to the bills drafting leif larrson. guy was as strong as anyone at the time but never did anything at aTm or on the bills. it's not that i think getting stronger makes you stiff but maybe too much focus on those last few increases when you're pretty much at your full strength potential takes time away from other things that are more important for football. get strong enough, maintain it, and work on other stuff
There are some prominent S&C guys that feel that athletes will reach their strength potential in most programs and therefore say more emphasis should be placed on functional movement and mobility.

I have no doubt our guys are doing a lot of the same lifts they were before, I think Clark mentions squats, hang cleans, and bench in the article, but it wouldn't surprise me if a little heavy lifting volume has been exchanged for more mobility exercises.

Stamina! Running a 4.5 40 at the end of practice=being able to run down a tired opponent or pancaking a dlineman in the 4th quarter. When you get tired you lose focus, you lose your mental edge. Being on top of things in the 4Q can win games for you. I love this philosophy of never taking your foot of the gas. It says screw the speed limit. In order to do this you need to be fit as all hell and this staff is getting the players fit to play this brand of football. Your last play has to be as good as your first.

Hmmmm...remember the uproar from the past players for not keeping Hicks? I'm glad Dino is going to live or die by Dino, I don't think he cares what anyone else thinks, it's his plan and he's going to execute it his way. Love it.

There's a video of Edinger talking about his philosophy when he was at BG. He talks about getting stronger as "easy" "it's water" "most guys will get stronger year over year"... But repeatable speed and endurance is the real difference maker. He also mentioned training for resiliency, not getting hurt, and recovery time.

hicks was good for guys who are so naturally explosive on the small side. freeney has been so successful, you can understand why he credits everyone who helped him. hopefully this new staff is flexible enough to tailor their approach for everyone's needs. we're hearing from guys that needed to lose weight so having them run around all the time is going to help those guys.

I like that philosophy...when you focus solely on strength you forget what is important to be successful at your sport.

...and to the players' credit, they've bought in and are working hard to get in peak shape.

Part of thinks D tackle is one position where you want the heaviest guy you can find (Vince Wilfork). I thought Clark was great last year, especially for a freshman. Are we sure getting down to 283 is a good thing?

In Dino we trust.

You see a lot of guts spilling out on good players in the NFL. I don't quite understand why it works there other than those guys are genetic freaks that can be athletic at that weight. Our defensive line needs to be disruptive and speed is disruptive. I think of a guy like Russell Maryland who was considered undersized when he played for the Jimmy Johnson Cowboy teams but used his speed to his advantage. That's what I hope to see.

Or more recently- Aaron Donald.

I have faith. Dino is going to show us that a lot of what we thought we knew, we didn't. I'll give you the fact that in most systems bigger DT is better, I think of Warren Sapp personally, what a monster that guy was. However, I wouldn't have agreed with most of Dino's other philosophies either. I am part meathead myself, control clock, control tempo, control possessions against those better teams, run up the middle for 3 yards and eat some clock, tick tock don't forget your jock. Dino's way imo is proven at this point, I can't wait to see it inside the Dome. I'm still scared of the going for it on your own 35 but hey, I have faith.

And I think coming out of college Sapp was 290ish. He managed to put on weight (and some gut) throughout his career but never seemed to lose his athletic ability.

I long said I didnt like the s and c when shy got to campus. That said the nutrition in this school is a huge draw back. The kids only eat at the center for breakfast the rest is at cafes. The cafes aren't open during the summer to players. The kids have to get food from the store to cook and shy had no stove for the whole summer because his was broke and he could t get it fixed. He will play at 220 and still 6 percent body fat but he could have been 230 now with a better nutrition program

Good point. The nutrition program is WAY behind a lot of other P5 schools. Should see what Florida's got. Or Cincinnati for that matter.
