Last year Jonathan Fisher and Shane Raupers punted 64 times for an average of 38.7 yards. The net punting average, (really the more important stat) was 34.8.

This year Jonathan Fisher has punted 53 times for 2070 yards, an average of 39.1 yards, 35.2 net.

The most impressive improvement was that first stat. We punted 11 fewer times than last year. I'm actually surprised it was that close. But that's still eleven possessions where we didn't punt. We had only one more turnover this year, 20-19. We've had 5 failed fourth down conversions compared to 9 last year so I guess that's probably 14 more scoring drives this year. We've scored 352 points compared to 290 last year so i guess that comes out right.

Interesting that we played so much faster and ran so many more plays... and yet we ended up punting less than when we played a slow it down, ball control offense.

Hmm.

Third down conversion stat for offense is off the charts. Number 1 reason that we were so productive.

Marrone's field position strategy probably keeps Fisher's average down. He punted a lot in typical 4-down or long field goal territory.

Last year we were 75/176 on third down and 8 for 17 on fourth down. If you add the 8 fourth down conversions, we converted 83 times in 176 third down situations, or 47.2%.

This year we are 96/195 and 10/15. so that's 106 conversions in 195 situations, or 54.4%. That's excellent but we actually weren't too bad last year, either. I wonder what the percentage is in avoiding third downs would be.

Most punts in a season, per the SU media guide.

88 in 1939, (when we were 3-3-2), and 1948 (1-8)
86 in 2005 (1-10)
80 in 2007 (2-10)
77 in 2001 (10-3)
75 in 1946 (4-5)
72 in 1970 (6-4) and 2006 (4-8)
69 in 1947 (3-6), 1984, (6-5) and 2002 (4-8).

We somehow skipepd G-Rob's last year (Rob Long punted 66 times that year). The "What doesn't belong in this picture" is the 2001 team, which was actually outgained that year but went 10-3 because Freeney and company forced 30 turnovers.
