Purdue Home and Home Series 2022 and 2023

I believe Brent Musburger was calling the game and introduced Fields as a highly-touted freshman that PP was expecting great things. Then the first pass was thrown into the turf. I don't remember many SU plays, but I'll always remember that one.

The one play I remember from that game. Purdue lines up 5 wide. We play press and show blitz, so we have all 11 defenders essentially at the LOS. Orton looks at the outside WR and makes a hand motion that says 'go deep'. We don't back off. 3 step drop, WR beats corner, 6 easy points.

strange OC schuled that year.. Ohio/Purdue/ND all in the dome? so do we play 8 home games if we schedule a fcs team?

FSU/ND/UL/Purd/NC st/Virg that is a serious p5 home schedule

That was horrifying.

Amazing that we could win a share of the BE title, blow out BC away and play Florida State to the wire, but get hammered by 40-50 points by Purdue and Georgia Tech. Classic Coach P era stuff.
Let's be fair. Classic Coach P LATE era stuff. Through the '90's we didn't see much of that.

It was a Sunday opener on national TV.
Joe Fields started the opener. We went 3 and out. Kyle Orton drove them down and the rout was on.

Embrassing performance.

This one of the many accurately defined games of that era...

The ol “w+ loss”

It’s funny bc I think that term originated from losses to ECU etc... but then it sort of morphed into describing blow outs too.

don't forget losing to Temple(both 2004 and 2002) , which back then was like losing to Rutgers (which he did in 2003).

interesting(and highly negative) Coach P stat: from 2002-2004(the last three years under Coach P) : Temple and Rutgers had a combined 3 wins against SU and a combined ZERO wins against all other schools in the Big East(excluding when they played each other). The man deserved to be canned. We just didn't deserve his replacement

Yup. That was a total debacle. I think Purdue was only a 6 or 7 win team that year also. I remember watching that game and never recalled seeing SU being so completely outclassed and overmatched in a game like that especially physically. Purdue wasn’t some Miami juggernaut either. Alsacs mentioned Kyle Orton and I think his receiver was Taylor Stubblefield who killed us. That atmosphere looked pretty awesome and intimidating.

I went to the game there in 2004.

I remember flat land and corn fields that went on for miles and miles. Never saw so much flat land in my life.

I remember the train whistle they blew every time they scored.

I remember the World's Biggest Drum being wheeled out every time they scored.

I think it was the first time I saw SU get destroyed in person in a long time. Probably since 1984. It was unfortunately a harbinger of things to come.

Anyway, West Lafayette is an easy drive from Chicago. I love Chicago. With any luck, the game will be played early, when the Cubs or White Sox are still playing.

This should be a winnable game and maybe it will help jump start our recruiting in the Midwest. As LeMoyneCuse points out, recruiting around Chicago has dried up significantly the last year or so.

Good job by the AD office scheduling the game. Makes a lot more sense than flying out to Pulman to play Washington State, or anywhere in Texas. It is good to see our schedules 4 or 5 years in the future getting close to fully blocked out. We waited way too long to book OOC games with previous ADs and as a result ended up with awful schedules every year. John Wildback gets it. Good work John.

I liked Wrigley a lot more than the White Sox park. I think it was called US Cellular Field when I watched a game there a few years ago. Hope the Cubbies are in town!

Exciting news! Father in law went there and all of my wife's famile is from Indiana.

Into jumping umps during the game with your son? If so, the Cell is your destination place.

US Cellular is now called Guaranteed Rate Field. the ballpark is a lot nicer than it once was, it was the first of the new ballparks and they basically made all the mistakes that all the newer ballparks made sure not to. they spent a lot to refurbish it, food and drink are great, neighborhood and team not so much. Wrigley itself is still what it once was, with new scoreboards and better food. Outside of Wrigley, it has changed a lot, hotels, a new plaza with restaurants etc. definitely a much livelier game day atmosphere.

That’s a good point. When was the last time SU played all of its non-conference games at home?

I live a few hours away in Bloomington, and if you'll recall I threw a board tailgate before the game...the first time I've ever done anything like that.

I had to rent a truck just to transport the keg of local beer I brought and cooked dino beans and brats for like 100 people on a portable grill. I may have bit off more than I could chew. It was about 130 degrees in the sun and I couldn't enjoy anything in the pregame because I was working my ass off. Incidentally, my now wife was a saint helping me even though she is not a football fan and this was not her idea of fun...that day helped me realize she was all right in my book.

Miserable pre-game and then the game started. I still get shiz from all of the Purdue grads I work with 14 years later. That said, it was the first time I've met many of you on this board (including you Tomcat, Billorange I believe, Joyce, etc) so it wasn't all bad in the long run. Maybe I'll try again in 5 years with different results.

Ragman, I was there too. Might have been my first road tailgate. You did a heckofa job. It WAS 90+ in a blazing sun. That tailgate was the only redeeming part of that day.

We came. We saw. We got obliterated.

My niece just started as a freshman at Purdue last month. I can’t believe I’m entertaining going back. I still have nightmares about that game.

Of course, I’ve just sent my in-laws a #BeatPurdue text. The smack talk can never start too early. :)

I think this is the only game I ever attended where I actually had nightmares afterwards. It was that damned train whistle/horn they blew off after each score.

Appreciate all you did for the tailgate Rags. Legendary stuff.

I intend to help with the next one.

Surprising a bit since we already filled our P5 OOC mandate with Notre Dame in 2022 and Army in 2023.

When my niece chose Purdue, I told her I could not stand that train whistle.

We must exact retribution!

That 2022 schedule is pretty brutal. Gotta think we add a non power conf team for the 12th game, if not a FCS team

2021 on the other hand...Albany, Rutgers, AND Liberty? :D

When the Orange play the Boilermakers, they will both be the top powers in their conferences and these games will have National Championship implications.

Expect some tailgate seasoned carpetbaggers to come your way. Game will obviously be on the shortlist of a roadie setup.

If this is in reference to an upcoming ACC/Big Ten challenge basketball game between our schools, then I agree with you.

As Power 5 programs go, they’re not that powerful. I like it.

Not elite but they are a legit program.

Brohm has them going in the right direction, (remember he was offered the Tennessee job during that fiasco) they have one of the best young freshman in the country (#4, can't remember his name) and facilities that we can only wish for.

Honestly Im just excited they are coming back to the Hoosier state after the ND game was moved this year. I too was at the debacle in 2004, I bet we won't get shut out next time!!!
