Earlier this year I said SU would be lucky to get much last 2-10. I was told I was a troll and a hater, but I digress. At 3-8 entering BC as an underdog to an ACC winless team, a reasonable person would guess that SU ends the season 3-9.

Shafer produced a 2-13 ACC record and obviously lost control of the team. His dismissal is probably the best thing that has happened to the program this year. Now, SU has to decide of they are serious about football, or just masquerading around.

To compete in the ACC SU will have to hire a big coach with a big price tag. The salaries they have paid in the past need to be doubled to attract a coach that would be willing to come to a desperate program and try to build something, anything, better than 3 win seasons.

Syracuse has a number of factors piling up agaisnt it for recruiting, both coaches and players.

-Poor attendance. The Dome is already a small venue and the sparse attendance doesn't help. Obviously winning some games will help this aspect of the puzzle, but so will a big name head coach.

-Location. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that Syracuse is the only ACC team north of the Mason Dixon Line, save BC. SU is competing against southern schools for southern recruits. Getting a blue chip athlete to pick down and out Syracuse over FSU, Clemson, GA Tech, and other schools, including neighboring competition from the SEC will continue to make recruiting difficult. A big name coach will help that, but so will winning some games.

TV Coverage. I live in the south and coverage for Syracuse games can be problematic. Sure, when they play Clemson and FSU the games are broadcast, but the majority of their games are only available on networks that most of the kids they are trying to recruit don't have easy access to.

Lack of tradition. Some will disagree with me, but this is a serious issue. The number 44 needs to be issued out again. These funky, Oregon wanna be Nike uniforms need to be sent to the incinerator, along with the matte navy blue and sparkling mettalic orange helmets. The 44 degree line thing through the numbers was interesting, however I find myself desperately wishing they would return to the old standby, orange with blue and white stripes, navy jerseys and orange pants. That uniform was iconic and particular to Syracuse. Now we're just trying to be like everyone else. Last time I checked, most of the top rated programs in the nation wear the same thing year in and year out with minor changes because of tradition and image.

We are the Orangemen. Thus politically correct issue is a minor one and only listed for my own displeasure and wish to voice my own opinion. Most recruits won't care if the team is called the Hairy Beavers as long as they get TV coverage, a full scholarship, playing time, and a shot at the NFL.

Inner administration. SU athletics needs to decide what it wants to do. Are we going to compete in football? Or, are we going to struggle through football season only to wait until basketball starts up (which hasn't looked too hot lately, compared to the teams of years past)? Joining the ACC was probably a bad idea. The American Conference would have been a better choice. We aren't in that situation, so SU needs to decide if they will pay out the money for football, or keep pretending.

This is the whole point. I was one of only about two people who could not have cared less about joining the ACC and I admit that it's largely b/c I've turned into a dinosaur at 37 and long for the good old days of the old big east. But both of the points here are valid, IMO: 1) need to pay through the nose to get a legit football coach b/c the $$ is essentially the reason we left. As for the second point on the American Conference, I tend to agree. It's interesting to note that northeast athletics departments have been left identity-less with the realignment. WVU has become an afterthought in the Big 12. Rutgers and UMD were surprisingly competitive in year 1 in the Big 10 but we all know how that story will end. Syracuse and BC are odd men out in a southern conference. And Pitt is, essentially what it's always been, a bland second fiddle to PSU.

Obviously things change but it's hard for me to predict great things for these universities when carving out an identity in conferences where you are essentially tagging along for the ride is a really difficult thing to do.

And, as a note, the money you make by moving conferences is still funny money. Yes, you have a lot more money coming in but it is still less money than the big boys make and it in no way shape or form relegates non-P5 schools to fielding uncompetitive essentially FCS teams. I can name 10 mid-majors (or however you want to classify them) that had far superior football seasons to BC/SU/UMD/RU and that's including UConn, which was seen as the clear loser of the realignment stuff.

I'll tell the kids on the Field Hockey and Cross Country teams that joining the ACC was a mistake.

Yeah, those titles will keep me warm as I bask in the glow of a sub-.500 ACC basketball record this winter.

An imaginary line was drawn between Pennsylvania and Maryland 248 years ago, and that should serve as a geographical point for what conference we should be in today?

There has been some improvement in relations between the two sides since then right?

Or is Trump building a wall that the Marylanders will pay for.

OP's reaction when the season went his way :)

Location:
NJ has athletes that compete with the south and throw in a good HC with an exciting non-NE system could be much more productive in the state. PA has linemen. OH could be fertile again. We'll always need some talent from the south and playing indoors gives us an edge over Pitt and BC some.

Attendance:
We will never be Clemson. But the Dome's acoustics, game experience, sight lines are great and unique. Exciting offense + new more modern Dome + Coyle paying attention = fixed. And up to this year the attendance hasn't been that bad.

Tradition:
1. I think Coyle will tact back towards traditional uni's - but I don't think it's that big of deal.
2. We are in the north, lots of hairy beavers.

Administration:
I'd bet the Kent, Mark, BoT are forward thinking on this stuff and you'll see some changes that show a commitment.

Anyone predicting a 2 win season with our schedule is a troll. Even with Gerg I'd have guessed at least 2 wins.

If they let me past the wall with my temporary Maryland Green Card, I'll occasionally stop over and drop a few dimes on blackjack and craps.

Obviously lost control of the team? BS.
It is impossible to lose 8 games in a row after a 3-9 season and not have a few 18-year-old kids be discouraged and some start to question the leadership, but that is far from "losing the team".
It was quite amazing they hung in there as well as they did.
