Class of 2021 QB Justin Lamson (CA) SIGNED NLI TO SYRACUSE (12/16/20)

You hit this out of the park. I have been saying the same for a while. I really liked Dungey but had my doubts about his accuracy and arm strength and I see this in this kid and he is only a senior in HS.
Dungey is a career 61.5% passer. DeVito is at 60.6%. Who is/was the more accurate passer?

Note: As TD's sample size increases I fully expect his accuracy numbers to improve.

what kind of throws they were asking each to make were different

and ED would tuck and run when he should have taken more chances throwing (more chances throwing difficult passes lowers his %)

and TD throws out of bounds too much (which lowers his %)

really hard to compare the two on accuracy by the numbers... but who throws a more consistently accurate ball all over the field? That’s Tommy

I would say arm strength is overrated. Accuracy and decision-making are hands down the most important aspects of any QB's game

I would say arm strength becomes more important when a QB is trying to make it to the NFL, but in college being smart and accurate matter the most.

Love Dungey as much as anyone else, but sideline passes to Erv/Steve/Amba really help here
I actually thought he struggled more on the sideline passes, such as screens, than throwing the ball down the field, where he was very accurate

Dungey had a few long passes but most were swing passes, dump offs. I like to see over the middle, down the seam and post.
What about all the slot passes?

Since you all have reading comprehension issues your Dungey/Devito posts are now somewhere in the deleted ether of the internet. This is the Lamson thread...Keep it on Lamson.

I wonder what Justin Lamson thinks of Dungey vs Devito as QB's?
And which one he more patterns his game after? :p

/ ducks. ;)

Given he only played QB for the 1 season, I feel like we're buying very low on this kid.
Which explains the low rankings and few offers, since he didn't do the camp circuit as a QB prior, and can't this year.

He's a football player - likes contact and physicality as a former Safety, and apparently is thinking about playing both ways this upcoming season (assuming there is one) - I think that's kinda cool.

Would love to know what his weight is up to now; even 'only' 210 is very solid for a rising HS Sr.
Dungey was a skinny 180 coming outta HS, so Lamson is miles ahead already in that regard.

Love the commit. I can see a little Dungey there, though that's a tough standard to meet. He doesn't need to be that good to be a very big part of this program's future.
I am super excited for this dude, and I think the comparisons to Dungey will prove not to be too far off
I certainly hope he is better then Dungey with arm strength and accuracy.

I can see where people get a little bit of Dungey but he actually reminds me more of the kid who apparently helped steer him our direction: Ian Book. I'm not sure many people are familiar with Book here but the kid is a really smart, savvy QB with nice touch. His accuracy dipped (at least in terms of completion %) this past season, but he makes really good decisions. Flawless on the read option, which was particularly noticeable since the better athlete of the two -- Brandon Wimbush -- really struggled with making the right decisions there. Book moves around well enough -- can run the ball or buy time by sliding within the pocket or getting outside and running or looking downfield.

If you watch Lamson's film -- he's got really nice touch as well, moves well within the pocket, makes throws downfield on the run and can run with the football. Hard to say he's as good as Book, but he has the look of a kid who can compete right away, IMO. Maybe not start as a freshman necessarily, but compete for the backup role and certainly has the potential to compete for the starting role in year 2.

Not sure he'll be as tough as Dungey or as polished as Book. Doesn't have Tommy's arm strength -- at least not in that film. But I wouldn't be shocked if he's close to as good as book and better than Tommy when all is said and done. I hope Tommy proves me wrong and has an outstanding breakout season this year. There's a chance that happens, but I do really, really like Lamson as a potential successor.

Nice find. Yeah, they look similar to me. I remember watching Book's film in high school and liking him but being a little surprised he got an ND offer. Then I watched him play for about 5 plays in relief of Wimbush and realized he was by far the better QB (though I guess the lesser of the two athletically).

It will be interesting to watch what happens between Lamson and Riley Leonard since both ended up in the ACC, both are with good QB coaches and both profile to be dual-threat type kids. i think Leonard has the higher upside. He looks like an unmolded piece of clay but he's really long, has easy, easy arm strength and tremendous athleticism. But he's going to need to be coached up. The floor is lower there, IMO.

Lamson I think will walk on campus ready to compete and could be really good. Not sure the ceiling is quite as high but honestly you never quite know. Would have been happy with either kid but for what dino needs (including a potential game-ready backup for Tommy ASAP), Lamson might actually be the better fit.

As an aside -- Book's numbers in two years as an ND starter (which includes 19 TDs vs. the blitz last year even though ND fans thought he got jittery when pressured):

*2018*2019
Notre DameIndJRQB1021431468.226288.48.6197154.0
Notre DameIndSRQB1324039960.230347.68.6346149.

Both were three star kids. Think it's a good comp but obviously a ton of expectations on a young kid.

Probably hurt by having just the one year as a starter. But I agree -- he looks like a really legit prospect to my admittedly amateur eyes.

After a year or two of Lamson, you are going to say TVD, who, Canadian kid who and Leonard who. I will be calling him QB Who

Great...now you and rackman18 are going to do Abbot and Costello routines. And don't say Who? ;)
