on Thursday night was pretty much par for the course when it comes to college football. I tried to scrutinize each QB the same way I scrutinize any SU QB, and I think SU's QB play is fine. Every college team wants the next Newton, RG3, or Luck running the show, but those are few and far between, and even those guys made a lot of mistakes with accuracy and TOs. Most big college plays happen when the receiver is wide open, the RB has a big hole to get to the second level, or for one reason or another, the RB gets to the perimeter of the defense. Of course, sometimes teams are simply able to dominate the line of scrimmage and run right over the opponent, but among P5 teams we are likely to see that less often.

Btw, Minny looked pretty good again last night against #2 TCU. SU beat Minny in a bowl game not too long ago. Go Cuse!!

The teams Syracuse beat in bowls recently (Kansas State, West Virginia, and Minnesota) had much better seasons last year than Syracuse.

Today is the beginning of the 2015 season, and I see no reason to discuss last season yet again (at least for today, lol). We all have firm opinions about last season by now, and I respect your opinion. I think this team is on par with Minny this season just like it was 18 months ago. Go Cuse!!

Not to deviate from your topic, but the most effective play type I saw in my limited viewing last night were jet sweeps.

in general, first games of the season on national tv tend to be decent matchups where offenses haven't gotten the kinks out yet, i think.

I'll keep that in mind tonight.

Edit- I misunderstood your post initially. I saw pretty much the same kind of QB play watching bowl games last season. A lot of good teams have QBs that struggle. While I agree about the kinks in the first game of the season, I think college QB play in general was represented pretty well last night. I'll continue to scrutinize QB play in other games the same way I scrutinize SU's QBs and see if I change my mind.

I would be curious as to your definition of "fine."

i think it's a little worse than what you see for the whole season.

middle of the pack qb rating so far is about 120

middle of the pack for the whole season last year was about 130

i would bet that yesterday will be boykin's worst game. i'm not guaranteeing it but i think it's more likely than not

Very true. The key to college football is avoid giving up the big play. If SU can do that this year, we should go bowling...

I would argue that the key to college football is MAKING the big play.

That's certainly the key for us.

Good question. I think the QBs haven't been the problem (T-Hunt won a bowl game in his first season as a starter), and I don't think they will be a problem this season.

Fair enough. I'd be curious to know the middle of the pack QB rating during this past bowl season.

Yes, I would love to see big plays from this offense in all shapes and sizes!

It's easy to forget how often McNabb's teams would have stupid penalties and be 2nd and 20... 3rd and 15... but more often than not, they could make big plays to erase mistakes. Big plays means you don't need 15 play drives which might end in a fumble.

Yeah, I'd love to see SU chunk yards more often especially under pressure.

I think scheming WR's open is a big part of it. There were multiple times during the UNC vs. SC game where a WR didn't have ANYBODY guarding him down the field. Them playing a hurry up helped with that a little bit. UNC should have won that game if not for their QB throwing 3 horrendous INT's 2 of them being in the end zone and the other with them knocking on the door. SC also fumbled 2-3 times and each time fell on the ball before UNC.

I agree. Getting guys open by design is crucial. Helps the QB and the blockers downfield. The really good college offenses have both going well a lot of the time. It helps to have a QB who can make plays with his feet as well as a good running game. Last night the QB for UNC made a few costly mistakes, and UNC has a pretty good offense.
