QB Room

I really believe Carney has already told the staff he is leaving. I think after the way Fran handled the Pitt situation , he felt that he wasn't going to get a fair chance here.

I hope you're wrong. That might mean Fran got an ultimatum, i.e. "Play Luke or else" or "Luke redshirts of else." I don't care if it's from Jim Brown, resurrected and eligible again. No HC can give in to that.

I'm not sure I buy it either. Luke seems pretty loyal to his lower level high school. I bet powerhouse TX high schools recruited him to transfer after he blew up ("Come play for us and we guarantee a top P4 offer if you start."). Luke stayed for whatever reason. Was it school loyalty? That would be a nice sign.

We all saw what happened in the portal last fall, we clearly didn’t have funds, we were bargain basement shopping. They thought Rickie was the guy, they found out in spring that he wasn’t and they had to pay good money for a second QB in Steve. We lost so much production and so much senior leadership from last year. Our margin for error this year was slim as is. Rickie was a bust, Angeli was very good and got hurt and here we are. Look at Arizona Staye, a playoff team, massive fundraising resources and guess what stellar backup they have to use now with Sam Leavitt done for the season? Jeff Sims, who is basically Rickie with like 10 years of college experience. We need a lot of roster upgrades, we can and will get another QB in the portal. Fran isn’t Shafer or Babers, especially in recruiting. Steve had a major injury 4 weeks into the season, Fran can sell a QB on the starting job being open for that alone. This season has gone to hell like many others when our QB went down but those calling for Fran to be canned and other stupid sh** need to take a Valium

We had the resources. Guys in the portal all get recruited and 90% already know where they’re going.

Now if you want to say our evaluation of who we brought in didn’t work out then I would agree.

The funds should increase next year with the new rules kicking in as well

Did we have the resources? It sure looked like we didn’t in the offseason beyond the two QBs we spent on. Seemed like a lot of bargain basement shopping. If we did, then yes, definitely poor evaluation with a few exceptions.

Angeli will be the QB next year. This isn’t 1995 the way some of you think with Achilles injuries. My guess is he will be back late spring.

JK Dobbins’s(a running back) tore his in September of 23 and was back by training camp in 24. He ran for 900 yards last year on 4.6 ypc and is averaging 5.3 this year.
I haven’t seen anyone saying he won’t be back

The hard part with finding a competent backup QB is that a lot of what matters cant be seen in practice.

Rickie has the skills to be good, and probably shows that in practice but when the light turn on and the defense actually wants to kill you, he folds like a sock.

Filardi doesn't really have either, I can see the vision where he may have looked good to someone, but the Gap between Long Island and power 4 is quite large.

Don't know about the 2 guys who haven't played and the Carney stuff is kind weird, I have no clue what's going on there, it if I as to guess it's some kind of personal disagreement, but I am not here to speculate
I think carney is insisting on being redshirted. I bet he wants to transfer with 4 years remaining

That wouldn't shock me, I'd be interested into when he made the transfer decision so if it's inspired by frans decisions or if frans decisions are a result of him wanting to redshirt or if it's somewhere between.

Never heard of any athlete being fully recovered from an Achilles in 7 months. ACL times have improved for sure but Achilles not much. Long ways to go

Don’t forget what it costs to retain players as well. We had the resources. Now is Fran demanding even more? Yes.

Angeli needs to spend a lot of time in the weight room. He’s slight of build with little legs. He has to put on some pounds or he won’t last next year either.

I think they had to see what the kid had to know if he should stay in the room or to go LAX. I thought if the oline had been decent he would have done ok. But with a terrible oline sure he struggled,

Wouldnt surprise me if Carney starts next week
Filardi is the only qb in the room who does not have a football scholarship. He has always been primarily lacrosse as that is where he has a scholarship.

That being said, I would not be surprised if he legitimately got first team reps consistently in practice he could actually develop and improve. He had no timing with the primary receivers because he probably has very little practice time with them. Rapport and timing are built with repetition. He has practice reps with Boobie which is probably why that ball actually looked pretty good.

I just dont think anyone, Filardi included, ever thought he would be playing meaningful minutes for us at QB. Lacrosse was always his primary path.

My question is why did Fran and Nixon think the 6th string walk on QB gave us a better chance to win than the scholarship quarterbacks in the room - Carney, Jakhari and Beilein.
Is it literally because he was the only one outside of Collins who knew the playbook?
And why would the walk on QB know all the playbook but not the other scholarship QBS?

Late spring seems ambitious to me, but I'm defiitely more optimistic he'll be ready for next season than some seem to be. That being said, Fran better be ready for every scenario. No excuses.

I will be happy if he is ready for fall camp, agree that spring is not happening. I am cautiously optimistic that he will be able to start game 1, but gotta have a solid QB2 who is sold on having a chance to start too

The Carney situation is befuddling. If he's demanding to red shirt, and you agree as the coach, why put him for 2 series (or whatever it was) and waste a game? If he's not demanding it, then why is he not starting to begin with, or at least the second half, and allowed the throw a pass?

If you are in the QB room and not Steve, you are almost certainly transferring - presuming you want to play.

Fran has some explaining to do.

We spent money on David and cook but yes most of the transfers didn’t pan out that’s also why we brought in 34 recruits last year and 29 this year. You build though high school not the portal.

As someone who has had the surgery, you can run on it in about 4-5 months. At 10 months it'll feel normal... and that's without a FBS training staff working on you every day. See Aaron Rodgers' recovery and he was 40ish. By January he'll be able to walk around and throw. It's really taking contact on the leg that you need to hold off on.

We're used to looking at Achilles injuries in the context of RBs, WRs and CBs where they get mediocre in a hurry if they can't cut and accelerate at 100%. For a QB and a leader, he can get a lot of work done while his leg is healing up towards game level stability. I doubt he would take any contact in the Spring anyway so they should be able to walk through a lot.

The timing works out to the start of Fall camp. Mobility may be limited or reduced towards the start of the season but Steve's there to chuck that pigskin downfield. If 100% is 500 yards a game, I'll take 80% of Steve over 300% of Joe Filardi.

It’s not the playbook.

You’re wrong. Cam Akers returned for the Rams in 5.5 months.

I don’t see why he would not. Even 30 years ago Marino tore his October 10th and was back by the beginning of the next season.
