QB Room

I think this is correct.

No current FBS starter is going to come her to prospectively sit behind Steve Angeli for two years. Maybe you could convince a younger guy, but that is a crapshoot.

Our best bet would seem to be to try to grab a starter from a lower level [FCS], offering a chance to "play up" at the P4 level. And then if it becomes a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency situation, then we'd have someone experienced.
Just to be part of a P4 program, get rev sharing NIL, and get an SU degree might be enough. Playing time might not be even needed to entice.

My sincere apologies for insulting Jeff Sims in an earlier post, the kid has over 200 yards rushing, about 180 yards passing and 3 total TDs. Can he play for us the last three games(he asks sheepishly)?
The ASU QB? He was horrible the first game or two when Leavitt was out. Leavitt came back for one game and then was gone again. ASU blew their status. But Sims, since has been better.

If that hypothetical kid didn't need playing time, Fran probably wouldn't recruit him. He wants kid to compete.

Every kid thinks they can play coming in, and most think they might have a shot at the league.

He has to be aware. Can't have another single QB risk with no one in the wings ready to go. I sure hope he brings in at least 1 transfer QB to push Angeli and whoever stays.
I'm guessing that deep WR group including some incoming ones are letting him know this. What good is being a prime WR if no one can throw the ball to them?

We are talking about a viable QB2. By definition they aren't coming here to be QB1.

Would be interested to see what Taron Dickens does after this season from Western Carolina. Hint, probably portal bound to the FBS with the numbers I will list below. In 7 games, he has 2,752 yards passing, 33 td, 2 interceptions, 75.8% completion percentage. Would have 2 more years eligibility it appears. Only 5’11”.
Fran played there.

Look, Fran thought we had two guys in Collins and Angelli. Good frosh waiting for the future. Collins is a clear miss. Hard to hang Fran out to dry when he has done so many good things. It sticks out because it is the most important position and QB 1 got hurt. Who is to say one of the Freshmen cant be a solid two next year. Who knows what the portal can bring. After this year I think Collins needs to play another position or at a different school.

They need to scout better and watch tape for transfer QBs. Collins was a big miss and I'm curious what his practice tape looked like.

Yeah he has usually been terrible but he had the game of his life the day I insulted him on here. I inspired him

His practice tape looked like Fran better get another QB before the season started. He did. Collins was a miss (those happen), followed by an immediate correction (and a home run one at that) and then a terrible piece of bad luck with a no -contact injury. Fran will get it fixed.

Deepest room in years

Fran needs to go out and find someone better than Angeli. Go look for someone better and let the two battle it out. Angeli is very good, but he’s not all world.

I agree. At the end of the day if the QB was healthy the team would be pretty solid. It's what made 2012, 2018, and last season so good.

Agreed, get someone that you will end up having to tell Angeli that he can take time with recovery and ease back into things as an emergency backup in 2026. This someone would be NFL bound after a great season. A fully healthy Angeli now two years removed from a traumatic injury takes over as a full time starter in 2027 with hopefully a developed QB room behind him. I’m just generally concerned that the January portal passes and the recovery isn’t going the way it should or they learn once he is fully recovered he isn’t the same QB. And the quality of the backup isn’t good enough to produce at a high level.

Is that so? Makes sense, but holy crap. And this was just a “why can’t we have nice things injury.”

Yep

Hunt (year ending), Hunt (year ending), Dungey (year ending), Dungey (year ending), Dungey (missed time), DeVito (missed time), DeVito (year ending), Shrader*, Shrader (missed time), Shrader (missed time), Angeli (year ending)

*I count Shrader as the 2021 starter even though he didn't start the season as QB1. Also I count that because he was hurt for a few games and while he played, he wasn't functional.

When "very good" translates into "leading the nation in passing" despite playing two early games against Tennessee and Clemson, after having never started a collegiate game before, this sort of assessmet sounds hollow.

Angeli was a perfect fit for our system. And he was capable of getting the job done, even against better defenses / higher caliber defensive players [cue someone referencing the uconn game to counter]. He essentially stepped into Kyle McCord's big shoes, and the offense didn't skip a beat, despite having to replace nearly all of the skilled players and 4 starters on the offensive line. Think about that for a second.

Angeli is a stud. Had he not gotten injured, I think we'd be in solid position for a bowl already [with the wins coming against SMU and Pitt, and possibly even UNC]. With him, the team could put up lots of points -- and maybe even contend in shootouts against the likes of Duke and GT. Not saying we win those games, but who knows.

Without him, the team has imploded. And suddenly the knee jerk reaction from a segment of the fanbase are that Fran can't coach, the OC isn't any good, and Angeli is just so-so anyway.
