QB Room

When "very good" translates into "leading the nation in passing" despite playing two early games against Tennessee and Clemson, after having never started a collegiate game before, this sort of assessmet sounds hollow.

Angeli was a perfect fit for our system. And he was capable of getting the job done, even against better defenses / higher caliber defensive players [cue someone referencing the uconn game to counter]. He essentially stepped into Kyle McCord's big shoes, and the offense didn't skip a beat, despite having to replace nearly all of the skilled players and 4 starters on the offensive line. Think about that for a second.

Angeli is a stud. Had he not gotten injured, I think we'd be in solid position for a bowl already [with the wins coming against SMU and Pitt, and possibly even UNC].
Agree with all of this. I just hope we get the Angeli that picks up right where he left off. Like is that an unreasonable expectation with the type of injury he had?

Nothing is guaranteed, but I don't think it is "unreasonable" [to use your term] given that he isn't a running-oriented QB, who relies upon athleticsm for playmaking. Hopefully, with full time access to the training room and therapeutic treatment all year [unlike when normal people sustain this type of injury, and only go to PT once or twice a week], he'll be able to accelerate his recovery and be solid by fall.

Still a tall order, given the nature of the injury.

Look, Fran thought we had two guys in Collins and Angelli. Good frosh waiting for the future. Collins is a clear miss. Hard to hang Fran out to dry when he has done so many good things. It sticks out because it is the most important position and QB 1 got hurt. Who is to say one of the Freshmen cant be a solid two next year. Who knows what the portal can bring. After this year I think Collins needs to play another position or at a different school.
Agreed. And for sure Colins will not be a QB at SU next year. It seems very unlikely he is getting much better at this level. There is a very low ceiling there. He can't be your back-up next year when we saw what we got out of him this year after his 3rd year in a college program and getting QB1 reps in the spring, and a good deal of PT this season. And keeping him as a 3rd string doesn't make any sense. That's a spot reserved for young developing QB that you hope to develop into a starter and frankly you'd like a better 3rd stringer than Collins.

They need to scout better and watch tape for transfer QBs. Collins was a big miss and I'm curious what his practice tape looked like.
Good enough to be a backup at LSU. I doubt anyone there saw the reality we see. Maybe the kid gets the yips. Who knows

When "very good" translates into "leading the nation in passing" despite playing two early games against Tennessee and Clemson, after having never started a collegiate game before, anyassessmet that pooh-pooh's his capabilties sounds rationalized.

Angeli is a stud, a FANTASTIC collegiate QB. Had he not gotten injured, I think we'd be in solid position for a bowl already [with the wins coming against SMU and Pitt, and possibly even UNC]. With him, the team could put up lots of points -- and maybe even contend in shootouts against the likes of Duke and GT. Not saying we win those games, but who knows.

Without him, the team has imploded. And suddenly the knee jerk reaction from a segment of the fanbase are that Fran can't coach, the OC isn't any good, and Angeli is just so-so anyway.
Agree with your entire post.

The last sentence is so very true - a big bunch of hypocrites!

This is the absolute truth.

Spot on. We need to sell a portal QB that Angeli isn’t locked in next year because of his injury but if Steve comes back healthy and looking like he did this season, we will be in good hands. I think this team is 6-4 at worst with him vs 3-7

So Fran’s QB recruits.Two categories.

McCord A++
Angeli B+
Collins D-
Carney - Incomplete

Belin - Was never going to play QB
Williams - Dino recruit
Filardi - Lacrosse player

Was Belin recruited to play another position? DB?

I think we need a QB2 that is a game manager. We don't need a guy that has an NFL arm, but does not have it hinged to any other tangibles/intangibles. Someone who has a great mind for the game and is a mini-OC, if not mini-HC, on the field. A guy that senses the status of the game and the need to get his teammates involved. If we have to rely on him all year, we will have a down year... but not an embarassing one. It can't be that hard, really.

I would say he is TBD with a positive outlook if healthy.
In fairness, he was hit pretty hard in every game. Remember, he also went out for a play against Clemson before his ultimate season-ending injury. The non-contract achilles was a fluke (except to the extent that a knee injury can exacerbate it), but we do have to wonder whether he can last a whole season.

I would be super creative to find a backup next season. A kid who is killing D2 and might have an extra year because of the Pavia case is Gavin Sukup from UIndy. Wants to be a coach when he is done playing. Kid who gets the ball out quick and runs the RPO very well. Just an example of someone who is experienced and probably wouldn't cost too much money.

Our starting QB has gotten hurt 11 of the last 12 seasons.
Wasn't Nassib healthy all 4 years? His freshman year behind Paulus and then his 3 years as a starter I thought he was healthy.

Yes. And somehow his QBR for the game was kinda low, which shows how dumb QBR is. He has 2700 yards passing, 21 TDs and 4 INTs. He is an Austin kid.

He's a 6 foot 4 QB from Austin, TX that has no recruiting profile anywhere.

Pops into their bowl game last year as a true freshman and casually throws for 400 yards. Then having the year he's having this year.

And we think 3rd and 9 is too daunting for our TX freshman QB.
