QB1: Angeli

I expect that the staff is selecting the QB based on their leadership and camp performance at Syracuse, and not one drive in a playoff game last year (that ended in a FG).
"That ended in a FG" seems like a pretty unnecessary shot at him. He came in with 1:36 left in the half and drove 45 yards to the 15 yard line in a little over a minute. The only reason it ended in a FG was a high snap which ran the clock down to under 10 seconds (on 1st down no less). Not sure what else you would have wanted Angeli to do in that situation. Idk what you have against him but it definitely comes through in some of your posts

Penn State defense was elite. Angeli led the drive that opened up the offense for Notre Dame. Abdul Carter in your face. Coaches have two very good choices. They just have to figure out what’s the best choice.

I’ll echo what others have said, that this is a competition of a high floor(Angeli) vs a high ceiling(Collins). It will be really interesting to see who gets the nod.

Will they go safe and bank on the skill players doing the heavy lifting, or will they go high risk/high reward?

I have to wonder if the decision is made on who works best for the team as a whole vs who might pop off the page more… a steady eddy or a dazzler?

Maybe it is already known, but why let Tennessee know? I think we find out shortly before the game.
Agreed, I've been thinking this too. Fran can tell the team internally whenever it's settled while still not saying anything publicly. Can't hurt to keep tennessee guessing

I don’t think it’s anything he has against him, per se. It’s who he is as a poster, sadly.

I have confidence that Fran and the coaches will put us in the position to win.
I watched some of Angeli’s tape. He goes through his progressions well and seems good at reading the defense.
Not enough film on Collins to make the same comparison. Not saying he does not have those skills just not enough film to compare.
I feel regardless of potential the qb that can go through progressions, read the D and get the ball out quickly will be the starter. Not sure who will win out but it’s great to have competition.

Wait, The Dazzler is involved in the competition? Things just got interesting!

Not a shot at him at all. In the moment it's everything you'd want from a backup.

It was a solid drive. But the revisionist history that it was this incredible moment is so over the top. Most of the throws were check downs. It wasn't "Tommy Devito winning the game against UNC" impressive.

Not sure Angeli will win the job but your the first person I’ve heard from that said the drive was not important. Every sports caster I hear talk about it says how ND could not move the ball and that drive helped their offense going into the second half and win the game.
Also I am not sure why I hear people complain about the check down. To me that shows a sign of a smart qb. You take what ever the D gives you. Deep balls are great but you want to move the chains and not throw ints.
I remember McCord when he was working with Gruden Grudrn telling him to take the check down and not force plays. McCord also emphasized needing to use the check down more.
Using the check down shows going through your progressions and making the smart play for that down.

That assessment sells Angeli's capabilities far short, IMO.

Tom Brady's best skill was reading the defense and quickly getting the ball to the guy that is open. On most plays, once a guy has made the catch, the offense has won the play, and can keep moving.

I hate watching a 3 and out where they throw three incompletions on deep balls. Give me a fifteen play drive any day; where the QB never throws it ten yards? Even better.

In college football you need explosive scores. Long drives are tough with penalties, turnovers, etc.agree on the deep balls need guys to take a swing pass or slant to the house. Enough deep balls to keep the defense honest, IMO…

Did you miss the first sentence where I said "it's everything you'd want from a backup"?

All I'm saying is that people are making too big of a deal about this drive ON THIS BOARD. The coaches will pick their QB based on their performance in camp. That drive has no bearing on it.

You don't know that. While the coaches will say that it is based on their performance in camp, Fran has also said that it will depend, at least in part, on which one shows the leadership of the team. (See the "Roadtrip" show of Tuesday.) We have no way of knowing if and how Angeli's role in that ND drive could affect the thinking of the coaches. Heck, they probably don't even know. So we have no way of knowing if that ND drive has "no bearing on it".

We need a game, pronto. People on this board are parsing every syllable of other posters and looking for arguments.

Now I understand why football players can't wait to get out of camp and hit players they don't know.

While I agree with you on what they want for a starter and leader, if either starter has 3 interceptions, (much less pick sixes) in the first half vs Tennessee, they will be the back up from that point on.

Neither has the body of work McCord had prior to Pitt.
Depends on how it plays out. Guess the better way to put it is they have a shorter leash.

I truly don't understand the logic of saying HCFB will take into consideration one drive from a previous season as a decision-making item for starting. It should have ZERO bearing on it. And if it does, HCFB is not the HC I think he is.

I have no inside information and no horse in the race, but the first moment the starter struggles this board will be crying for the backup despite having no insight to how the race for qb1 was decided.
I'm dreading that moment, but you're 100% right. That's why we sort of got to hope that 1 of these guys is head and shoulders above the other in camp. Doesn't mean they are the better player long term or will be the #1 forever, Just means that they had a better camp and scrimmages. Better field general, better throws, better legs, better reads, etc.

Haven't seen anyone say it yet. But you can bet your butts whoever runs the better 2 min drill is likely going to win the battle in camp. Fran and Nixon have talked about the 4 min, 2 min, and 1 min drill and that saved our butts several times last year.

Being able to execute the offense is the most important part of being the QB.
Making the right reads of the defense so you get First Downs and points is what's most important. Not who throws the best ball or is more athletic.

This^^^
Brady and Joe Montana were the best I've ever seen w/ this. Patience and not always swinging for the fences is a great QB trait. And frustrating for defenses as well. It starts off as dink-n-dunk, but suddenly you look up and it's 1st down from the 17 yard line.
