Quadir Copeland/NC St

Copeland was always going to be a good player as an upper classman. It was clear as day. Definitely needs a jumper though and you need to surround him with shooters.
Yea but with those number and percentages, he clearly found a better coach & team to optimize his talent that he wasn’t gonna get here, sad to say.

THIS!!! Even as much as we hate Red right now it is foolish to act like this is on him. It is on Q and Q alone. Drape Kingz on him all night and shut him down.
Generally agree but truth is likely somewhere in the middle

Takes time for some talented kids to “get it”. Quadir is in his last year of college ball. Good for him and for Wade. Too bad he didn’t get it earlier in his college career. He played a little less at McNeese St as a junior than at his sophomore year at SU, scoring a little less too. His stats at McNeese were pretty equivalent to his stats at SU except for a slightly better assist/to ratio (1.6 vs 1.4). Good for him being so much more efficient and impactful this year but it took 3 years time, work and patience.
Good post

The thing that will always make me sad about Quadir is he was the happiest recruit we had. The dude loved Syracuse and was just so, so excited.

It's just a bummer when stuff doesn't work out with those guys.
Exactly. Which is why, if I was the head coach, I would’ve worked harder to keep him and guide him and give him the tough love that Will Wade clearly did to get through to him. Red gave up. Q wasn’t just some troublemaking malcontent. You could see his upside and his love of the game and of winning. He actually reminds me of DC in that regard (to bring it back to my earlier post).

Yeah, see, that's perfect. You need guys like that in the program once in a while. Just complete weirdos that make the game within the game really visible.

It's my hope for Sadiq White tbh.

Him and Judah combined for 12 turnovers that game. Seeing all their antics off camera was worse.

That being said he'll be Magic Johnson tomorrow.

I hear what you're saying but you have no idea how much Red and the staff and the players perhaps tried to get him on the right track. I specifically don't know either but do you really believe that Red and staff would not have tried multiple times talking with him and getting him situated?
I just think Red was/is ineffective at it, which is why he shouldn’t be a head coach at this level. You can see he doesn’t have enough of a charismatic, forceful, and persuasive personality. Hop did and was very effective at bringing guys like Paul Harris, Johnny Flynn, MCW, Dion, Devo and others back in line. He wasn’t just a good cop, he was a charismatic guy who players loved and was so persuasive, he made you believe in what he was selling. I think that’s always easier said than done. It takes a certain type of personality. A coach who is obviously a brilliant strategist can also be persuasive.

Yeah, but Copeland and DC don't even belong in the same breath. This is his first good year. Even last year, he was 7th in minutes at McNeese and had a paltry 1.6:1 assist to turnover ratio. And that was against the mighty Southland Conference competition.

He is having a good final season, but it has to be kept in perspective.

The red flags were there during after Red's first season. Judah and Copeland had talent. Yeah, there was a lot of drama. Good coaches command respect and can dial that BS in. That never happened...

We were told by insiders on here that Q wasn’t going to classes and wouldn’t be able to qualify academically for the next season, and that’s the reason he was forced to leave. They said it wasn’t really about the big personality and high risk-high reward way that Q played. But honestly, I don’t know if I believe the academic issue anymore. It now just feels like more spin by the coaching staff. It was mid-semester. He still had time to improve academically. IMO, I believe it was rooted in the latter two reasons, and I think that further shows Red’s poor judgment and stubbornness as a head coach. We all knew Q needed to improve and mature and rein in some of his excesses. But you don’t let raw talent and athleticism walk away. He was only a sophomore, and it was Red’s job to help him mature and grow. But he didn’t want to deal with it and cut bait and then failed to land a PG anywhere near as good as Q. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.
He could barely even transfer to McNeese state without some maneuvering

You find it hilarious people dismiss Copeland with out doing any research presumably on Copeland, Mcneese state? Seemingly suggesting you did do research to perhaps support your position? Then you share no research on Mcneese state that would support your position or on Copeland. You simply pivot to Wade at NC State and their current school and their current situation. Again if Copeland has matured and grown up great but that's separate as to why he needed to go.
What you and some others seemed to insinuate was that Copeland’s transfer to McNeese State was purely the result of him being a “head case”. To me, a high-quality CBB coach (not person, but coach) did a lot of research on Quadir and was able to maximize his talent after managing to hold him accountable for his actions.

Wade and Copeland did some things wrong to end up at McNeese State, but it’s funny to me that people dismissed that transfer simply because they had never heard of that school, or because it was so beneath SU. Since you requested some research, in '23-24 (Wade's first year at McNeese), they finished #67 in KenPom (up from #335 the year prior) while SU finished #80. Last season with Copeland, McNeese finished #60 in KenPom while SU finished #115. I’m sure they had nowhere near the resources we do.

If the situation between Copeland and our staff devolved to the point you say it did, then it is unfortunate that both him and the staff allowed it to reach those levels. While a lot of people are happy to throw Quadir under the bus, I can't completely absolve our coaches of blame. I’m glad he has been able to become the player some of us thought he could be, and it’s a shame that it didn't happen here.

Red may have been partly to blame for letting things get to that point, but if a player stares down his coach during a game (on top of everything else), there's no saving it. He's got to go.

Also, if he blames Syracuse and is looking for revenge, maybe he hasn't grown up as much as he thinks he has.
