question for old time ballplayers-

I'm 52 and still on planning to play this winter with the locals, which can include 20 year olds. Sat out last season after having surgery on my wrist. I apparently broke it the season before bracing my fall from a impact with one of those younger ball players. Went a year thinking it was a sprain until it being diagnosed with a scaphoid break. February Surgery by good surgeon at Syracuse Orthopedics Hand and Wrist Center, including pin and bone graft and I'm almost good to go...But definitely see where i'm slowing down..

you were hit by a car that was traveling 60 miles per hour?

Yes... unfortunately. The car was totaled. Amazing that I'm able to be fairly active, but very sad that I'll never play bball or run again :(

Frankly, it's amazing you're alive!

Scaphoid fractures are really frustrating - difficult to heal due to poor blood flow. Then any misalignment can lead to reduced ROM of the thumb, pain on flexion and general annoyance. You may find that it's still painful going forward - mine still hurts but doesn't limit my activity, weightlifting, etc. Good luck.

Used to play 3-4 times a week 20+ years ago, but multiple ACL tears, 4 right knee knee surgeries, little to no cartilage left, and no ACL either in my knee has gotten me to give up at 47. It pains me to watch others play in the Gold's gym, and now and then I go shoot around for fun. Just can't run on the knee anymore. I've thought about getting the knee replacement, just so I can play again. Anyone gone through that?

Hate to say it, but typical TKRs won't allow you to play again (at least not fullcourt 5-on-5) at a high level. The jolts of impact and lateral stresses / torque on the prosthetic shortens its lifespan significantly and you'll just have to get a revision in 5 years instead of 10. I suspect your doc will "order" you to stay away from high-impact activities... of course we all still give it a shot :)

Hey folks, interesting that this thread came up last week--I dislocated my kneecap for the second time in three years about a week ago.

Do any of the board orthopedic specialists have any suggestions for strengthening exercises for the knee?

Appreciate the advice--swimming / jump rope sound like good options.
