Questions from an LSU fan headed to Syracuse for the game

Thanks for all the great recommendations and replies. I am forwarding a copy of the thread to my travelling buddy. I do not know how it works up North, but down here our wives have a way of letting us think we guys actually decide where we go eat and such, but they pretty much run that show. Hopefully there are some shops near the casino so we can cut a - you go shopping/we go play golf - deal one day with the wives.

The women in the south do love their football and bourbon though. A noon start ought to be interesting for this crew, the bars are going to do a very brisk morning business.

I think we will head out to finger lakes. Are the leaves turning yet or are we too early for that?

I did not know your qb got hurt, I hope he is able to play Saturday.

Fournette is a fun player to watch. We were at the Auburn game last week and that was kind of a break out game for him. He is a big guy who runs a 10.6 hundred meters, so once he gets moving he is really hard to get off his feet. Teams that have had success against him bottle him up before he gets up a head of steam.

I really do appreciate the civil and helpful responses. It doesn't work that way on a lot of message boards out there.

.X. Matt Brewing (Saranac) in Utica is a short 25 minute drive from the casino. Good beers and a great history. The tour is very interesting.

In the other direction, Owera Vineyards is a great new winery in Cazenovia, about 30 mins SE of Turning Stone. They serve local craft beer as well and have awesome wood-fired pizzas. Cazenovia is a cool little town too, with some interesting shops and restaurants.

If you're looking for a good glass of bourbon, head to Al's Wine & Whiskey Lounge in Armory Square or Scotch 'n Sirloin on Erie Boulevard.

definitely have pizza .. almost any pizza place will kill any pizza youve had in the south ...

We have great food here at home, but this is a true statement. I was in NYC a few weeks ago and passed up a dinner invite to some fancy restaurant in favor up grabbing a few slices of pizza at some storefront midtown pizza joint. I like the Italian food in NY too.

I was in Memphis in June and they took us to supposedly the best bbq joint in town (it was good, that's one thing they do well there). I might have to check out Dinosaurs and compare , its getting a lot of mentions on this thread.

I've been on brewery tours all over CNY, and even Ocean City MD. The Saranac Brewery is by far one of the best tours I've been on. The 3 story 18,000 gallon brew kettles are a sight to see.

I see where you guys have a great schedule this year with teams like Clemson, Florida State, Virginia and LSU on it.

1st, I would like to say welcome and enjoy your time in Syracuse. I am very happy to say I will be in Syracuse for a game. I have incredibly missed 2 straight years of Dome football *been to 2 aways game in that stretch*

2nd, I would like to inform you that we joined the ACC 2 years ago :p

The four of us made the trip of a few years back to West Virginia, but flew in and out the same day so did not get to see much of the area. I get to NYC a good bit but have seen little of upstate NY, having been to Buffalo once for a short business trip.

you arent comparing WV to Syracuse are you? couchburn

First of all, congratulations to Syracuse on their 3-0 start. I do not know all that much about the northern ACC teams and Syracuse football (At the risk of giving my age away I certainly remember Larry Csonka, Floyd Little and Jim Brown). I see where you guys have a great schedule this year with teams like Clemson, Florida State, Virginia and LSU on it.

I am headed up for the game on Thursday and will be staying with my wife and another couple at Turning Stone casino. The four of us made the trip of a few years back to West Virginia, but flew in and out the same day so did not get to see much of the area. I get to NYC a good bit but have seen little of upstate NY, having been to Buffalo once for a short business trip. Ant recommendations on places to go or restaurants to try? I think we will probably rent a car and might play a round of golf at the casino course. The girls want to see Niagra Falls but I don't know how doable that is. We are headed back on Sunday.

I can answer most questions anyone has about LSU football. The formula most teams that have beaten LSU in the past couple of years use is very basic. Bring a safety or two up into the box to stop the run and make LSU beat you with the pass. LSU has a young and talented qb, but he did not throw much in the first two games and missed a few throws badly in the Auburn game. LSU actually has two or three receivers who will play in the NFL, but cannot seem to get the ball to them. LSU has been fortunate thus far that even against eight man fronts they have run the ball well. Fournette is drawing comparisons to a lot of great college backs and is a load. Guice is a freshman running back who is very good as well. Stopping LSU is not rocket science. I would commit as much as I could to stopping the run and take my chances with LSU's passing game.

LSU's defense is still a bit of a mystery, both Auburn and Mississippi State moved the ball well against LSU in the second half. There is a lot of speed on the defense everywhere. They play a 4-2-5 base defense and all five defensive back starters I think will probably get drafted. LSU is thin depth wise with their front seven and do not rotate defensive linemen as much as they did in the past. You could see the front seven run out of gas in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State. LSU fans are excited but not sure if their 2-0 start is because LSU is improved or that Mississippi State and Auburn are just not that good.

We are really looking forward to seeing a new area and enjoying the cooler weather. We make a couple away games a year and for the most part the fans at other venues have been great. I think maybe the roughest crowd we ran into, which was a bit surprising, was at West Virginia. I still liked it better than going to Tuscaloosa. Auburn and Ole Miss have great venues for college football.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for places to go and food to eat. We prefer the local haunts to the tourist places, and definitely like trying out local cuisine, so please do not send us to a Cajun restaurant. Lol. Hoping for a good football game Saturday. Orange is not my favorite color, but Syracuse orange is way better than Tennessee's neon orange or Texas burnt orange. I guess when your team is purple and gold though(a mardi gras story is behind that), you can't be too critical of any shade of orange. Laissez les bon temps rouler.

Finger Lakes has a bunch of Distilleries as well as the hundred or so wineries that do tours. WELL worth the trip. Also consider 20 minutes outside Syracuse is apple country in Lafayette. Central NY has the best apples on the planet.

If you plan on heading to the Finger Lakes and the ladies are in a shopping mood, they will have a great time at the Waterloo Premium Outlets mall (http://m.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/Waterloo/tourism). I'm not a golfer, but I am sure there is a course nearby where you can get in a quick 9 while the ladies are running up the credit card bill.;)

This is just not true.
I have to agree. I've had pizza many other places that I've found superior to any of the pizza I ever had in Syracuse. I loved ZJ's pizza, though...that stuff was the best.

"What's a ZJ?" "If you have to ask, big man, you can't afford it."

Finger Lakes is a good choice. As others have mentioned, it is an easy day trip from Turning Stone. I would suggest taking the NYS Thruway I-90 west to the Geneva exit (42) then going down the west side of Seneca Lake (rte 14) to Watkins Glen. From there, you can take 414/227/79 to Ithaca which is at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. From Ithaca you can travel up the west side of Cayuga Lake and hit the wineries there along Rte 89. At the top of Cayuga you head back west a little and get back on the Thruway at exit 41 (Seneca Falls). This way, you do a nice loop where you get to see two of the biggest and nicest Finger Lakes and a lot of really good wineries. Here's a link to a site with some maps. Just make sure some one goes easy on the sampling.

We very much appreciate civility as well around here. We know who the good and bad fan bases are. Enjoy your trip.

I was going to chime in here but can't for the life of me remember the names of these places. I will give a description you guys fill in the names. We are fairly new to the Syracuse area ourselves But the dinosaur bbq is great. We ate last week at a place downtown that was a bar with music that served waffles. All kinds of waffles. That place was good. A few months ago we are at a shack on the side of the road for breakfast it was featured on man vs food and had some great breakfast food. Then there was a diner downtown that looked like a fifties dinner they had great food also. I have been dying to geT into past abilities and try that I hear it's great but haven't been. Ok guys fill in the blanks

Utica pizza is better than all

TK's Pizza in Fairport is the best ever. I've had some good pizza all over though. Certainly some good places in Cuse and Utica. Even a couple places down here in VA do a nice NY style pie.

Funk 'n Waffles, Mother's Cupboard, and...you got me stumped on the diner.

Funk 'n Waffles was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Little Gem or possibly Stella's.

Hey, there's always the B'ville Diner, too!
