Quincy Guerrier . . . Superstar?

I think that QG will be good as long as he knows his role. He is an energy guy, not a volume shooter like he seemed to try to be at the start of last season.
He tried to be a volume shooter at the start of last season? Huh?

No. He had very nice games against very weak, undersized opponents.

Later last season in games he got 30+ minutes, he had 14 and 12 against Louisville, 16 and 10 against NC State. Had 7 and 9 against UNC in only 19 minutes.

He was starting to do it against the big boys last year. This is a continuation of his strong play and IMO he’s going to be pretty effective regardless of opponent. He’s strong, aggressive, relentless, and has pretty good skill for a bruiser.

and that was while playing thru a painful nagging injury too

I think he’ll be a good player, but seems like another guy being anointed a superstar based on some less than meaningful statistics. If we had superstars on our roster we would be a lot better than a 25-40 ish kind of team.

Ok, I agree there. I’ll admit I didn’t even really pay attention to the word “superstar” as far as taking it literally. I guess I just automatically take that typical message board stuff with a grain of salt.

We probably haven’t truly had a “superstar” since Wes Johnson, though Gbinije was arguably an under the radar superstar as a senior.

Yeah, the competition wasn't good and all that, but Quincy's domination of Niagara yesterday was significant beyond him merely getting a second double-double. The most important thing he did was hit his only 3pt attempt. Along with everything else he did, that was really big.

The reason is cuz we can all recall last year when 1) he really looked lost a lot of the time, and 2) he was forbidden to take 3pt shots after he missed them too frequently. It made him look...well, kinda flawed, ya know?

But then this summer, after hearing he played injured last year, we were moved to a 'wait and see' attitude toward Quincy's potential. Last year we saw him making a lot of mistakes in the zone; would he be much improved this year?

What I think we saw in this game vs Niagara is that Quincy is "there." Where last year we saw a lot of uncertainty, this year we're seeing a guy who knows what he is doing, knows how to help this team.

But the question was always does this guy have the ability to make an open three, or not? Quincy being a reliable 3pt shooter makes him a major major threat to opposing teams. Indeed, it makes him potentially a weapon as formidable as Carmelo Anthony. If his three ball begins to look like Melo's, then what does that make him as an offensive weapon to this team?

The thing is, we've heard that he hits his threes in practice and he said in a recent interview that he always hit 3-4 threes per game in high school. So yeah, with the confidence he's been able to build up by listening to his coach on how to improve his team play, there's every reason to expect that Quincy might turn into the team's MVP before our eyes, become that Big Time player that we were all imagining when we heard he had committed to Syracuse years ago.

His game yesterday just oozed confidence, and I'm getting pretty excited about what a confident Quincy Guerrier could do for us as this season continues to unfold.

And then there's Kadary... :)

**Edit: Because so many have opined that Guerrier "is not" a Superstar, currently, I should re-iterate that the claim I'm making is not that he IS a Superstar at this time, but only that IF he starts to regularly hit open threes, as reliably as Melo did, we'd then logically have to allow for the possibility that he could very well become a major Superstar for this team. Is it a reasonable projection?
It appears that Quincy is continuing to show his potential greatness as this team's MVP. He didn't come into the program with the kind of complete game that would immediately make him our designated Superstar, but he always did have that potential. He needed to learn a lot about how to thrive in Jim's system, and has done everything that's been asked of him. More and more, I expect Jim will rely on him to lead this team to big victories vs our most formidable opponents...

Black swan is special. It’s someone that does extraordinary things and they don’t come along often. Some people call trump a black swan. It’s not racist. It’s special

Is it too early to talk about him leaving after this year for the NBA?

in the 20s, it's never too early to talk about someone leaving early

He’s a year older than the typical Soph, so with as well as he’s playing, I’d be shocked if he didn’t leave after this season.

What I love about Guerrier is that he does what he’s good at (is that grammatically correct? Probably not). We love to have five-tool players — to borrow a baseball analogy — but I have a soft spot for guys who know what they do and just get after it.

My guess is that guerrier will round out his skill set to a degree but I LOVE that he’s just a ball of energy in the paint. Not sure it gets you a paycheck in the league but it is unbelievably valuable for a college team.

not sure he’s a superstar but it makes me think of a superstar. Melo was one of those guys that had a wealth of skill but he always knew when we needed a bucket to park his sizeable keyster in the lane and get fouled or get to the rim. Under appreciated aspect of his greatness, IMO. Guerrier has some of that dna — get down low and battle your a$$ off. Love it.
