Quint's Top 20: Comebacks, Defense and Lacrosse on TV

6. Syracuse
Big Sunday win. Sloppy offensive patterns and weak shots led to a 25-minute scoreless drought in the middle of the game. It was turnover city at Cicero-North Syracuse High School amid the snow drifts. The defense and goalie Drake Porter actually did their part but got little help until late. Jamie Trimboli made it 6-3 in the third quarter on an extra-man goal providing temporary hope. Stephen Rehfuss’ fadeaway jumper pulled them to 7-4. The EMO kept them within striking range at 8-5 and 8-6 on a Bradley Voight lefty layup. Then, 8-7 with a righty rip from David Lipka, who was given the middle with 3:15 to go. Reset shot clock with 1:40 to go when Rehfuss scored from the crease to tie it with 1:24. Orange held for the last shot that Brendan Curry rattled a righty rip off the pipe. A Curry low-to-low shot was saved by Duke in OT. With the shot clock dwindling, Curry capitalized on a poor wing approach for the diving game-winner, snapping his 0-11 afternoon. This victory was defensive-based. Duke only had 10 second-half shots. That group led by Nick Mellen and Brett Kennedy kept them within striking distance, and unlike their Virginia loss, the Orange finished with authority. Never quit. Twenty of their last 36 games have been decided by one goal.

HHH is at Notre Dame on Saturday at noon (ESPNU). Steve Schlanger and Matt Ward have the call.
