10 Syracuse — “Head, heart and hustle” has the worst face-off unit in the ACC, and its impact puts undo stress on a struggling close defense. Saturday’s home loss to Notre Dame was a reality check for Otto. Swagger is earned by winning titles and grinding for contested groundballs. It comes with stopping your man from penetrating to the goal. It’s developed through defensive chemistry when all six parts plus a goalie are firing as one machine. It’s developed by overcoming obstacles and finding a way to win. This loss to Notre Dame stings. When you can’t win a face-off and don’t make saves, the outcome is inevitable. When you can’t cover the opponent’s top threat, you’re going to have issues. SU led 6-2 in the early stages of the second quarter. Then the bottom fell out. The Irish scored nine-straight goals on their way to flipping the switch in an 18-11 Dome drubbing that’ll leave a mark on SU’s aspirations. SU is now 1-2 in the ACC and 4-3 overall. UAlbany visits the newly renovated Carrier Dome on Thursday at 5 p.m. on the ACC Network with Mike Corey and Myles Jones on the call.
