If you read the original NYT article, the focus is on the UM Baseball program. Not saying it doesn't go further, but I just believe Gus bought into the BS they were selling.

If you read the original NYT article, the focus is on the UM Baseball program. Not saying it doesn't go further, but I just believe Gus bought into the BS they were selling.

I know that it's about the baseball program. But (a) does anybody think that an out-of-control athletics program would monitor against any cross-contamination between cheaters?; (b) "The Nexus of Performance-Enhancing Drugs" is perhaps not the most desirable marketing slogan for an institution; and (c) I'm sure that Gus bought into the BS, but my point is that he knew what kind of reputation he was buying into, and he bought into it.

BTW, not PO'd at Gus at all. It's just that I can't buy a meme that he was deceived and that he's lost his bestest fwiend, his RB coach. No doubt there will more than one someone hanging around campus who will help him get over that real quick.

Tottenville never officially explained why Belfort, along with running back Augustus Edwards, was made inactive for the playoffs, but school principal John Tuminaro told the Daily News in November that the suspensions “may” have been connected to the investigation into the suicide of a 15-year-old Tottenville student Felicia Garcia, who took her own life on Oct. 24 by hurling herself in front of an oncoming train.

Edwards did not return a phone call seeking comment

Connected to teh investigation, not the taunting. I believe the kids who bullied her were expelled. Even if that's not the case, you're assuming an awful lot from that very vague paragraph.

Speculation raged on social media and among Felicia 's friends that her very public suicide was tied to teasing she endured following an alleged sexual encounter she had with some members of the football team. That teasing was pinned on two students not on the football team, both of whom were later removed from Tottenville, according to sources.

When asked if the suspension of the four players was in any way related to the situation regarding Miss , 15, Principal John Tuminaro said, "I'm not making that connection. People can make their own connection." Tuminaro told the Daily News, "There may have been some connection. But to put this at the door of particular players would be incorrect."

Tuminaro stressed that "there are no criminal charges" pending against the four players.

"Coach [Jim Munson] and I met with the parents of the students not playing, and this is what we decided we needed to do. I wish I can share more," Tuminaro said."

A day after the 15-year-old's death, word spread throughout the school and on social media that Miss may have been the victim of bullying or taunting after she was said to have had an encounter with members of the football team at a postgame party following the win over Port Richmond.

Some conflicting stories here sex with football players & harrassment by students, harrassment by football players. The question remains, why was he suspended. It was a pretty harsh penalty in connection with this case for someone innocent of no wrong doing.

With just a few posts an individuals reputation can be ruined. Just last week a college football recruit become so intimidated by crazy fans tweeting him death threats that he hid his visitation schedule. I can believe that the authorities at the school were afraid for the safety of these kids. If I could find the post I would point it out but there was an article that discussed fear for the safety of the players. Honestly I hope Gus finds himself a new start in Miami.

Done with Gus. He made his bed. I remember when the whole thing came down (and Marrone was still coach) he was quoted as saying he wished he could just get far away from NYC but he would honor his commitment to SU. Of course he didn't have a Miami or FSU offer at that point. Maybe it works out for him, maybe not. I'm not the type who welcomes back "wayward" recruits though. It messes up your current recruitment of kids who are just as good, maybe better and who actually may want to come here.

There's no reason to incorrectly label this kid without knowing the full story, especially when it's a label based on a pretty big leap in logic.

Yes I believe that you are correct bnoro. I remember reading that Gus was definitely not one of the ones who was taunting and the taunters were expelled. From what I gathered Gus/and other football players were the ones who participated in the group sex stuff with her and videotaping. I'm not sure if that would get them suspended but it was a party where it went down so if there was video evidence that they were there and possibly drinking etc that could explain them being suspended.

Rumored videotaping. Another rumor along with the football players taunting rumor on Social Media. There is another article that stated that the police checked all the players phones, etc. and no evidence of videotaping was found.

i believe that was the case i read as well. that gus and other football players were actually the ones who had group sex with her. i thought it was said that the coach suspended the football players because they were involved (group sex, bragging, which led to taunting) because it would have sent the wrong message by allowing them to play. that a game a game was important then a young kids life. i thought they were ultimately suspended because he was involved, but was not one of the ones doing the taunting. either way it's all speculation

This is classic sour grapes. The only part of this scandal that most cared about a month ago was that it would not affect Gus' scholarship. Now we are labeling him as one of the bullies.
