Rb in between the tackles?

This thread reminds me of a lingering question. Why are most designed runs between the tackles? Teams used to have speedsters who would go outside for big gains but we don't see that anymore.

Not a coach, but as a result of the spread/no huddle offenses many defenses have adjusted to having faster players on the field in alignments that match more naturally with spread formations. That means things up the middle don't clog as immediately.

I do think part of the issue going up the middle is that defenses can converge from both outer thirds of the field, whereas going outside the tackles just by distance on the field alone you're less likely to have a defender on the opposite third of the field get there quickly enough to stop the play.

You have to be able to make team respect the threat of running between the tackles against a lite box. Otherwise the D will leverage the SS and/or Will to take away outside runs and constrict the short and intermediate passing game.

It depends on how well you block it. There's usually a defender on either side that doesn't have to run as far as the RB to get outside in addition to the everyone else that's persuing. Block that/those guy(s) and with a fast RB you turn the corner for a big gain. If you don't, your guy runs 20 yards to gain 1 or 2.

I don't think he's that type of player. Hill may be that guy and jitter bug through the giants or one of the transfers but be don't appear to have a one cut play through contact guy. To be fair we didn't last year either.

Maybe our OC can run plays for the players we have this year unlike last year? Crazy thought right? There are plays that can be run outside the A or B gap though... other teams do it after all

Two ways to run outside. You design plays to get there. Or you have a RB who can see the hole open and go there.

You need a much more nimble Oline to get to the edge and usually you need blocking from TE/Wrs to make it work.

Our edge blocking has not been very good, we gave up on the WR screen game because they were terrible at that as well.

New oline lets hope the blocking gets better and we have more options.

Wow good thing I found my glasses, I first read this thread as rub in between the tackles.

Wow that’s scary - I wondered why the WR screens were never used. What a pathetic year
