Reasons for optimism heading into the 2015 season

Home run threats at RB every time they touch the ball - McFarland, Morris, Strickland.

Big, tall, athletic WR's who should be ready to contribute.

One more year of Trudo jawing at the opposing DL.

Trick plays! Think Lester likes to mix in some gimmickry.

Is strickland even qualified yet?

If your calling the jet sweep a trick play ...then maybe but I do not remember a bunch of trick plays last year, but Im getting old, maybe my memory is fading.

Not thinking of the jet sweep by any means, thinking specifically of the double reverse flea-flicker against NC State, but admittedly I may be so focused on the horrendous memory of watching that live that I am over stating how many trick plays we actually ran. I just feel that looking at the idea of calling trick plays as a positive is a risky call.

Agree with your first 3, but trick plays make me nervous. If we are resorting to trick plays (as we did, I would argue, far too often last year once Lester took over) it shows that we are not confident in moving the ball down the field with our normal offense.
We used to run trick plays when we had Graves at QB. Even Marrone/Hackett weren't above calling a flea flicker in a bowl game. You don't "resort" to trick plays. You employ them.

I remember some great trick plays being called in those situations you mentioned and I want to make clear that I do not hate the idea of using trick plays in advantageous situations, but we were talking about what makes us optimistic heading into this season. For me, you can't employ a trick play if you have no consistent offense. I guess I want to see that from Lester before I am excited about his possible use of trickery. So I guess we were just looking at it from a slightly different angle.

We've run that cross-field throw back to the tight end for decades ... often with success.

I agree. I love the tight-end throwback, I wasn't arguing against misdirection and the occasional true trick play. I was just responding that it wasn't something that was giving me optimism for the new season. As I said I to javadoc, I may have confused trick plays with misdirection. I am in no way against the jet sweep and tight end throw back. I was thinking more along the lines of the double reverse flea-flicker that Lester unleashed against NC State last year.

I'm optimistic our run blocking gets better with the hiring of Moreland.

I'm optimistic our ground game gets better with Lester running the show.
I'm hoping our ground game gets better, too, but it's interesting to note: we averaged 195 ypg on the ground under McDonald, and 111 ypg on the ground under Lester last year. Obviously there are bigger reasons. But still, I was kind of surprised when I saw that difference.

23. #44 may be back in play, the offense will take some pressure off the defense, the Fine tailgate is performing at a very high level, and I moved to CNY & bought a season ticket to celebrate the most promising days since Pasqualoni. The tide has turned and great players are choosing to play in Orange.

Are you hinting that Hunt May in fact be...

Optimus Prime?

I read that as pretty much announcing that Hunt IS in fact Optimus Prime. Thought perhaps I was the only one to read it as such.
