So, I took a couple of our players to a college today that they have interest in attending. A smaller school, but as a litmus test I asked them what are the most important things to them. Three things before the conversation changed direction. In order:

1) what they're going to study (mind you they don't anticipate being D-1 so this is very important to them).
2) facilities, they want to go somewhere that looks and feels nice.
3 sportswear apparel affiliation. Literally saying that they wouldn't go to a school unless they wore Nike or UnderArmor. I was literally dumbfounded. I said, are you guys serious? That's something you care about that much? It's even a thought? They said it's not a deal breaker bust most certainly weighs in the decision significantly.

These are very intelligent, very hard working, very good athletes. I was absolutely floored that it even matters.

Notre Dame and Nebraska do fine with Adidas gear. Hell, I remember in the early 90's when Notre Dame was using Max Pro helmets, which as any person knows from 20 years ago, were the worst helmets in the world. Yet, they always had a top ten class.

But I guess it does matter...

I have always maintained that like any student pondering a college choice, every recruit imposes a different set of values and priorities. I actually think it's more like choosing a graduate school, with the role of head coach (or position coach) being analogous to your major professor.
