Recruiting vs coaching

It doesn’t matter how good your recruits are if you don’t scheme and use them as a team .
Wildhack took a huge risk in hiring this inexperienced head coach and DC. We had to do it, nothing else worked. Robinson (ex-NFL and Mack Brown assistant), Marrone (alum who succeeded but went on to NFL head coach), Shafer (trusted and well-liked assistant) and Babers (builder of non-P4 programs) all were failed experiments.

Marrone wasn't a failed experiment. He left. Brown will leave too, if he's successful.

That’s exactly it. We are a stepping stone program now. I won’t be upset if Fran bolts at some point for a bigger program because that indicates that we’re doing pretty darn well here in Syracuse.

He is 9 games into his first season. Defense (which was bad yesterday) is showing its wear because of the injuries. Do we not have our best recruiting class coming in next season in probably 2 decades?

We are already saying he is a failed experiment?

Man this fan base is off its effffing rocker at times.

Let’s break that out.
It always matters how good your recruiting classes are. In this college game, it will matter how good your transfer recruiting is as well.
The schemes have to be good. Our offense scheme uses McCord and a passing attack, and tries to work around a below average OL. We score enough and the passing offense is putting up record numbers.

I am not convinced about our defensive scheme, but Fran will bring in better DL and corners.

They are mostly stepping stones now & that's OK. You want a program builder, one where you can survive without. Need to be able to move on from him when it's time. No idea why people think he won't move on. I'd be very concerned if he's here still in 8 years. Would love to be wrong.

Babers and Marrone should not be mentioned in the same breath as the other two.

I agree we need to relax. On the recruiting front we are obviously better but not sure that bar is super high. Doesn't seem recent signees have been off the charts but I don't follow it that closely especially this early. I think we need to temper doom on the schematics and euphoria on the recruiting. Early to judge on all fronts.

also, for years because our recruiting was awful, everyone bought into the notion that you needed a coaching staff to scheme our poor talent into beating better teams. By and large, if you look at the top 25 year in and year out, it's the teams that consistently recruit the best that win. Yes, there are occasional exceptions but talent wins out in football.

Bad coaching can certainly make good talent worse (see FSU) and great coaching can make average talent better...and awful coaching can make mediocre talent pathetic (see Grob, RIP).

We lose a close game on the road that we were an underdog in and people lose their minds.

Unless you're getting a portal full of 85 guys, freshman take time. We're not going to purely rely on the portal. We also are signing big HS classes that also take time.

Guys will get better. If they dont recruit well, we'll have a new coaching staff in a few years but we have to give a recruiting strategy some time.

Not if you look at average star rating, quality over quantity. Frans first class had more star talent, and he brought in a top 10 transfer class. The transfer class for this offseason will be CRITICAL… as well as staffing changes.

It’s not that great… the class has 31 recruits when most other programs have 20. By average rating it is well into the 60s

I was at the game yesterday behind the Syracuse bench. There are flaws to this team that couldn't be fixed quickly. The OL is big but they are not athletic. Thus, you can't run the ball. An OL takes multiple years to turn around so you have to be patient and it is very hard to fix it through the portal. And, McCord is not fast/mobile which means if the protection breaks, he is in trouble. The defensive front looked undersized vs BC and BC pushed them around and ran for over 300 yards. Brown came from Georgia, so he knows what an SEC DL looks like and he knows what he needs to do.

This is year 1 of the Brown era, so I wouldn't get concerned as he is bringing in better players. I would guess, Brown needs to make some staff adjustments and he will.

Recruiting this day and age also involves the portal so I think he will hit that hard this year especially on the lines. Another thing with recruiting though is wins and losses, if it’s 7-5 that’s not exactly moving the needle for anyone.

Sorry, I’m just the opposite…..scheme means ZERO without good players.

What are your expectations seriously. We are who we are. We will never compete for a National Championship unless somehow all the stars aligned and we had a crazy Indiana, Washington, etc type season.

My expectations are to go bowling every year and have a decent competitive team. This year we are going bowling and have a competitive team. I’m very happy because I’ve seen the lows for too long.

Stop being unrealistic. This is everyone’s first year. We will get better as players are upgraded and coaches learn from mistakes.

Ehh not to rehash but his wins by season were 4, 8, 5, 8. Yes he left for the NFL but he didn't exactly take us to any promised land.

Ehh, not to rehash...but the SU football program was in the Mariana Trench after Grob. What Marrone did was nothing short of miraculous really, especially when considering the grossly negligent administration at the time in regards to SU football, et al. Marrone begged and pleaded for an IPA, and was told "someday" when "someday" was already a day late and a dollar short.

After year 2, and maybe after year 3, Brown & Marrone could end up w similar win totals.

I am not saying that and agreed, you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.

How are we looking at the end of 3 years?? That is really the valid, longer-term view needed...

That said, we are watching young, firsttime coaches this year and that can be and is frustrating at times. Criticism and discussion on mistakes, unpreparedness, inability to adjust schemes, etc. is always fair game whether you want to hear about it or not. It doesn't mean fans aren't realistic about our situation or that criticism = no patience.

The real question is can these young coaches learn from mistakes and get better over the next 2 years

I hope they will, of course.

It's also realistic to think perhaps some won't. It happens.

We have a big experiment going on here. Criticism is always fair game but patience is also needed. We can walk and chew gum.

That’s a horrible attitude. Why are we a stepping stone program? We have probably the nicest stadium in the ACC now, great practice facilities, and momentum on the recruiting trail. No reason we can’t be Fran’s Gonzaga.
