Red

How do you know that JB wanted Gerry? That has been a take on the board but no one knows that for sure.
True, he certainly never told me personally.
But I think it is a generally accepted belief.
Plus, interesting that now that Gerry has left the program, JB no longer seems to have much contact with the current team.
Maybe it is just a coincidence?
Maybe he was asked to step completely away to let Red find his feet?

I can't read most of this, but I love all of your attitude that a Freshman can't come in and play that well. OK. Talk to Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc. oh and Melo while you are at it. What kind of attitude is this? Yes. We have a top 10 recruiting class. I for one don't want to lose them all, and if you change coaches, they can opt out of their signed commitment. Maybe we need one better assistant coach than what we have, but we have to keep Red, and let's trust that this team of super Freshman CAN make a difference.

Kansas plays 1 freshman (off the bench), Kentucky plays 1 freshman (6 minutes a game off the bench), Duke has a generational talent and is getting way different caliber players than us. They also have two top 40 freshman that don’t see the floor. It’s 2025 the college game is dominated by experienced players. Comparing it to Melo’s team is pointless.

I don’t know. Something in the program has to change to give me any hope for this.

I think that's playing the short game and delays the inevitable. This also discounts the possibility that the right hire could absolutely retain key pieces See Fran Brown's ability to retain important veterans - arguably his biggest accomplishment outside of closing on KM.

Agreed. Kiyan is not another Melo. His talents are much more comparable to Bronny James than to Melo. You don’t hold on to a coach based on the recruits he has coming in. Cooper Flagg is a unicorn. If Kiyan and Sadiq decide not to come if Autry is fired, so be it. It would not be the end of the world.

Unfortunately, it’s where I’m at as well. This sucks so much more because it’s someone who has been around the program and community for years. I already feel awful about the current state of the basketball product we are consistently putting out. I put a fraction of this on Red, but every stakeholder can take some fractions of the responsibility as well. National media is starting to notice how in disarray the state of program is in and it’s actually for real this time. Not a mediocre year that we can look ahead next season and say hey we’re going to be good again. I’m terrified how bad the heat and division can get if next season is not a better product from Year 1 and a significantly better product than what we’ve seen so far in Year 3. We know Stephen A Smith will atleast be watching and following. It feels like we’re putting any bit left of the soul of the program on the line next season if we don’t see drastic change.

Bronny is not a good comparison. Kiyan is better. I agree we aren't winning with freshman and holdovers from this years team though.

If we can get a Malachi Richardson like freshmen year from Kiyan I would be ecstatic!

I'm conflicted because if we are starting all the freshmen we won't be very good. We need to hold on to Moore, hopefully Freeman and get a center plus veteran pg in the portal.

Honestly, Kiyan and Moore are roughly the same caliber of recruit - 4 star, very good 2Gs on winning AAU teams, used to playing with other good players, and traveling the circuit. Moore was one of the best shooters in HS last year, remember? How many guys can we have at the same position?

So what about the year after next? Do we just keep Red another year after next because we fear losing recruits again? So he just "can't" be fired while we have good recruits coming in year after year?

Maybe without Red and someone else leading the program, we would have landed a serviceable PG and better portal players. I don't know, call me crazy. And maybe someone else as head coach, we have a better offense and defense and win more games.

It doesn't matter if you can lure a bunch of talented kids to your program, if you can't coach your way out of a paper bag. Players want to win. Players want to compete for honors and championships. Players don't want to play for losing teams.

It will change if it absolutely has too.

This is not sustainable. If it continues, there will be a change.

1 - they are not super, they all seem to be very good, but they will be freshman.
2 - yes top 10 freshman can do very well (see Duke, Kentucky, Melo etc.), but none of these guys are top 10
3 - I believe a good point guard (and a rim protector) would do wonders for the program
4 - I think a coach needs a few years (3-4) to get a team that is upper class heavy, but I have no idea how to accomplish that in today's environment.
5 - current results are really bad

I'm a Sadiq fan. But he's not changing this program's trajectory by himself or with Kiyan and the Aussie.

We need to really hit in the portal and Red needs to grow as a coach and probably adjust the assistants (assuming he is getting another year).

I've said it before, but once this season is over and they decide if they want to retain Red, I need to see Kline and Red do a presser where they say the strategy for next year, the guys they are going to get on top of the HS kids to map to that strategy and in no uncertain terms be confident in making the tourney.

The PG and C position alone is abhorrent and if it's even somewhat replicated going into next year, it's a fire-able offense (if not already one for this year).
JJ Petar Donnie Moore 3 frosh a real PG, and two Athletic bigs and we have a team. Chris can come back but needs to take a pay cut.

spot on. If we can retain the core from this year add the three frosh and a few solid kids from the portal we will be good.

I follow what you're saying, I imagine this year will make it harder to recruit class of 26 and future years. Hard to see a class of 26 5 star committing in-between now and next November with where things currently stand.

Let's see how next year goes as he is almost assured of one more year. There is a slew of issues which we all are aware of. The one I'm most perplexed by is how Red handles the substitutions. The timing of them is the first thing that I don't understand. We seem to sub when the 5 guys on the court are hanging in there. Or worst when they seem to have a good rhythm going. Bang, a sub or multiple subs come in and momentum and rhythm are broken. For me that is the most mindboggling thing that Red does. The second is the combinations of players he goes with. Sometimes we will have 3 maybe 4 guys on the floor that really can't shoot or score. Bottom line is I can't for the life of me see what or why he is subbing the way he does.

I feel there has been a malaise over the program since the 2nd sanctions in 15. I didn't feel that in 16 with that unexpected Final 4 but that unexpected run delayed the inevitable. Eventually I felt the malaise as I call it around 2019. I believe there is only one way to rid the malaise.

Hire outside of the Syracuse family and inject new life into the program. I think Red gave the program a shot in the arm with making some changes and being an engaged HS recruiter but he's a first time HC learning on the job and its not making the impact we hoped it would.

I'm curious how this year plays out, how embarrassing do things get and if any move is made.

Will it happen this March, probably not. The team likely wins enough games to avoid missing Acct. Year 3, the seat will be nearly on fire
