Red's Postgame Presser | Colgate

"Eddie has been in an out. His conditioning is not where it needs to be." In and out as in struggling with injury and that is what is holding his conditioning back. He did not even participate in warmups because of his back. Still looked like one of the few guys on the team who gave a crap last night. And Woodward only had four points. 15 points 12 boards 5 assists 0 fouls. Lead evaporated when we took him off the court. Soooooo far down the list of problems with this team.

How many excuses is everyone going to make for this guy? How many?

He is NOT in shape.

He gave up as many points, if not more, than he scored.

I was told he was in shape. Already. As in, present tense. Now it's not yet because he's injured.

Target keeps moving.

Yeah when you get injured that kind of moves the target, just like it would for anyone. Literally did not participate in warmups because of it. Thats a little different than skipping conditioning to work on his dry rub recipe, which is your theory. He was not the main problem on the defensive end last night and you know it. His hurts us with the lack of rim protection but he simply did not give up as many as he scored. Their actual center also had only 4 points in 31 mins. Half the team looks like walking zombies out there. Meanwhile he is out there actually giving a sheeit.

Yeah it was so he didn’t fall after trying to block the shot. Cmon I think you know the game a little more than that
I thought it was pretty obvious from the replay that as he jumped to block the shot the Colgate player jumped in to him a bit and knocked him off balance in the air. He grabbed the rim to avoid going horizontal and falling.

Call this what it may be, but chance is a great defender who isn’t playing. Naheem - even if it’s for 5 mins- needs to be a rim protector but he’s not 100 percent right now and Red explained how bad of a matchup this was for him. Eddie has been hurt so he can do usual workout routine. These are not excuses, they are things that are real and affecting the team

I guess my question for Red (among several) that is if you knew you wanted to play fast, why didn't you bring in a more athletic center to pair with Lampkin? Even if his conditioning improves you can't expect him to play 30 MPG and not get burned out by mid-February.

Why are they asking Davis to play on the perimeter? Do they have any offensive sets? Bell needs to have sets to get him open looks at 3s. Going through Lampkin each time down the floor won’t work if he doesn’t play at a very high level, which he didn’t last night.
The offense still needs work. But the problem is clearly the defense.

Somebody had to say something to him right after the game because he started that presser aggressive. I'm also not sure I'm bragging up our rebounding numbers against a team with one big guy who got one of the more least friendly whistles I've seen in a while (if the officiated our big like that this board would have been on fire).

As I commented in another post - Texas is a huge game - for Red, the team and our fanbase - we cannot afford another 20 plus point non-competitive beat down.

Red talks about not shooting as well as we know we can. It's only two games, but we are at:

FG%: 43.7%
3PT%: 26.7%
FT%: 61.5%

It's way, way, way too early to take anything from this as gospel, but if we don't raise those significantly combined with our lack of D, this is going to be a long, long, long year.

He is right in that in terms of assessment. My lord.
We don't know who we want to get shots. It's clear we are better at ball movement but the end point isn't clear.

It looks like the most effective thing would be to run inside-out with Lampkin, Freeman, and Davis as interior scorers, and Bell, Starling, and to a lesser extent Moore as perimeter outlets.

Anyone else that scores is opportunistic. It should be pretty efficient.

To date this season the Bell/JJ/Moore trio has only attempted one more three than the rest of the roster. That seems off.

We want Bell to get shots. Catch and shoot is his best ability playing basketball, by far. He needs 6-8 attempts a game.

If every possession ends with a shot attempt at the rim by Lampkin/Freeman/Davis or a three by Bell, we'll pile up points.

Through 2 games we're ranked in the top 25% of teams in offensive rebounding percentage and 14th overall in defensive rebounding percentage. Some regression is expected against the bigger teams we'll face in Brooklyn but so far it's been a strength, as has our ability to hold onto the ball and not get shots blocked, both traits that last year's team had as well. If one of your criticisms of this team is the lack of "identity", there it is - Shot volume.

We all know the defense isn't where it needs to be, but at least we're getting a shot up nearly every time down, often multiple. If you can't find positives you're just setting yourself up for a miserable four months.

As one who knows he's never had good basketball instincts, I've come to the conclusion never to get too discouraged or excited by the team's performance or lack thereof. I really like our players, especially how many functional players we can put on the floor. I think one reason JB played like 7 guys was that it was easier to develop chemistry with a shorter bench. I think Red is opting for a different model but the lack of chemistry, especially on defense, is going to lose us some games until and unless Red can get all of these talented kids to play well together and understand their role in a discernable offense and unified defense. We don't really have a TEAM just yet, rather individuals that show moments of team play. Nor do we have good team leadership, either. Lampkin played inspired basketball at times but it didnt translate to defensive intensity. Again, I know squat but that's how it appears to me.

Red came into the presser salty. I wonder what caused that. I'm also not sure why getting more possessions was what he led with.
I'd love to know why an athlete like JJ is such a poor defender. He still is a disaster defending against screens. Guys blow by him. Same with Carlos who came with a good defensive reputation as the defender of the year last year in his conference.
Also in the exhibition games we didn't see guys jogging back on defense like we did last night. How Red addresses that issue will say a great deal about him as a coach.

Wild idea: teach defense to the other guys?

I agree to some extent but like these guys have been playing basketball for their entire life at the highest level. I think there’s some thought that they should know how to play man to man defense at this stage of their life. Eddie was spinning around in circles with screens yesterday. Like what is that. Should there have been clear messaging about going above screens ? Sure but we don’t know that Red didn’t convey that. We’ll see on Saturday what product shows up on defensive end. If there’s anything I’m “mad” at it was the softness of everything. You gonna let someone drive by you then whatever, but foul them. Make them earn it. Show you care. And I didn’t see that once yesterday from JJ and a few others.

JJ's fourth foul was exactly that,,,bumped their guard on yet another drive.

To your point we have enough guards if nothing else to chew up some defensive fouls and make it uncomfortable out there.

That and/or he was a little early getting there. Happened not far from my seats, we were all gasping, it was a pretty scary play.

I'm sure Teddy would've been happy to T him up if he were it justified, but up close it was pretty obvious what Chris was doing.
