remember when people here didn't want Chip Kelly?

So we should have wanted Chip Kelly because he coaches the Eagles now and is considered an innovated NFL coach?

Honestly, all this says is that had we offered Kelly and he accepted (which is funny in itself for so many reasons) he would have used the job as a stepping stone to the NFL. And that is different than what happened how?

you don't remember a lot of the more meatheaded objections to kelly

and it's a good thing we got a guy with strong ties to SU who wouldn't use the job as a stepping stone to the NFL

We can't ever really know this, but I suspect we would have fared a bit better and garnered a lot more media attention, while establishing the premier offensive identity for northeast football.

Northeast recruiting ties thing is especially funny considering his first few coaching gigs were Columbia, John Hopkins and U. of New Hampshire.

Nah Skippie Holtz...everyone knew he was a natural given his blood line and all. And he would have been so loyal. Just like his dad.

Edit: Beat me by a couple of minutes xc.

Marrone is better than this fantasy non-hire IMO.

Chip was the best candidate - and one that was a way better hire even without the benefit of hindsight with guys like Holtz and Gill.

Confirmation: Oregon took quick action to lock him up once we started sniffing around.

As an Eagles fan - I was way happier with Chip over Marrone - and I think Marrone will be a good coach.

I actually think we did very well in hindsight. Who were the coaches/coordinators being discussed at the time as a number of posters mentioned above... Skip Holtz (failed at USF), Mike Locksley (failed at New Mexico), Truner Gill (failed at Kansas), Whipple (?), Kelly (proven to be an elite level coach), anyone im leaving out? While we didn't hit the grand slam in Kelly (who knows if we could have even procured him) we had the next best succesful transition/option with out question. We did well considering the options and I certiantly do not regret the choice.

I'll assume that your hypothetical refers to the post-Robinson hire, after the 2008 season.

I'd like to push it back, not to Gross' hiring of Robinson in 2004, but to the previous year, when Jake C. may have been about to release Coach P (according to a rumor reported by Donnie Webb), but was overruled by Buzz Shaw. What if one of the names on Jake's short list--which he stated all AD's carry around in their pocket--was Chip Kelly? After all, there is the New England connection. How different would SU football history be!!

im glad we cant pull up old posts from TOS.. Im pretty sure I was all in for Locksley and was livid when we didnt get him

oops

i was and forever will be all in on LEACH
yes you were.

i wanted an offensive guru for the Dome as well, but was firmly in the Addazio camp as i figured he would be the guy.

at the end of the day, marrone still had the best resume and 'talking points'.

will they want him in 2 years? if the giants didnt suck last year he doesnt make the playoffs

You didn't read the article.

It's not about what he did - but how he's doing it. Making the playoffs helped, but the X's and O's were better than everyone else - as well as the sports science stuff. Based on the article, I don't see a hot seat in two years - but a "beware of other franchises poaching him" ...

The NFC EAST is thus:

1. Eagles

2. Giants
3. Redskins
4. The hollow shell of a dead cow carcass with a burning star crater buried deep in it's horrible heart of darkness cowboys

I'm just glad we didn't get Randy Edsall. I think everyone can agree on that.
