I hope it happens.
Retiring #44 was idiotic.
Retiring it during a hellaciously bad season for a sparse crowd at a USF game was utterly embarrassing.
The whole freakin' point of the tradition of the number was that it was ACTIVE and worn by a succession of players.

Was it ever retired for basketball? I mean, it's been worn in other sports, right? I think we just haven't had anyone in basketball who was particularly interested in wearing it. Maybe if Thomas Bryant comes to SU?Everything above. Stupid question but if 44 is allowed in football again, could a hoops player wear it again?
Yup. Besides, what's wrong with retiring JERSEYS like the basketball team does, but not retiring the number? Honor the guys who wore it. Build a statue for them [heck, we've already done it for one of them]. They deserve every accolade they get for their accomplishments.
But retiring 44 and removing it from the rotation made zero sense. Especially when The Express is still front of mind with today's recruits.

It's long been said that jerseys are retired, not numbers. 44 in football is the only case. 39, 88, 5, 9 have all been worn as late as this year. In basketball, triche wore Douglas' 20, Wes wore rony's 4, josh wright wore 30 etc etc.elimunelson said:I don't know that's why I was asking. It would seem it's unofficially retired in hoops as well. The whole thing is completely ridiculous because of the lineage of the number and not the specific player who wore it.
I'm conflicted, if it's been discussed with Strickland. He may very well be worthy of it - I hope like hell he is, because a bird in the hand. But if we bring it back and give it away, there goes Robert Washington.
I wonder if he had stopped using his USC luggage by the time he decided to retire #44?
Imagine having the rafters lined with famous 44 jerseys. Brown, Little, Csonka, Wallace, Coleman, etc... '44' could ring the dome.Yup. as you know we currently treat 44 the way MLB does 42 for Jackie Robinson.

Thanks Matt—I have been working with Floyd Little who works on my staff in regards to 44—as you know we currently treat 44 the way MLB does 42 for Jackie Robinson. There may be some rare occasions when we bring 44 out and Floyd is working on those dynamics. Love your note as it makes a lot of sense.
Don't get me started on people thinking Csonka wore 44...ill end up fighting about how nunes magician is a joke. Not csonka, but maybe Owens
