Restore 44 : Dontae Strickland says it has been discussed

I think it's wrong to think that poor performance on the field by a player tarnishes the legacy in any way. It's not a measuring stick - the number stands on its own. You give it to kid that shows great promise on the field - and is a great kid off of it. A kid who respects the legacy fully.

Like the recruit in question ;).
I agree. The legacy has already been established. No one can take away what Brown, Davis and Little did. Nothing can change that.

Well, we'll know soon enough whether 44 will matter for Washington or not. A ND reporter just tweeted that Washington is nearing a decision.

You don't give a kid 44 that hasnt proven anything on the field yet. Promising it to a recruit is foolish.
I don't recall Brown, Davis, or Little ever earning the right to wear it. Brown wore it first. Davis and Little were freshman when they were given it. It looks like it was given to them to live up too. They never proved anything at the time bc freshman weren't eligible to play. But either way I'm all for putting a banner with each members name of who wore the number in the rafters next to the big 44. Then have a a group decide (brown, little and members who are alive who wore the number) determine who wears it. Kind of like how past heisman winners have a vote on who should be the heisman winner.

They made the number 44 something to be proud of. There was no significance until they wore the number. It was just another number.

That was true for Brown. I don't think it was necessarily true for Davis (I'm basing this on The Express, which admittedly took some liberties), but you don't think that by the time Floyd Little was being recruited, wearing 44 meant something? I mean, the staff said, basically, "Here - you're going to follow in the footsteps of two legends by wearing this number."

The first I ever heard of anyone being offered the number was Mandel Robinson. Maybe some of the older fans know when it went from just a number to institutionalized.
