Rickie Collins

Duke gives up a lot of points, and we're at home. We'll need to play well but this is about as good a circumstance on the schedule to hand the ball over to Collins to right from kickoff.

I won't be shocked if Carney sees some snaps.
So it will be an interesting week of practice. For the coaches on the board, our #2 is now #1 and #3 is now #2. How will practice reps work. Three plays for Collins and then Carney takes a few with the first team? Keep alternating with primary reps for Collins but working Carney in? I would think Carney would get a good dose of gameplan prep and snaps with the ones right? Just to get some timing down and comfort with our center and some reads?

I worry about Collins' accuracy.

He had that big baseball pitcher looking wind up, which helps him have great velocity, but has so many moving parts that he seems inconsistent.

There's a reason pitchers in baseball spend a lot of effort practicing to repeat their delivery exactly the same way every time. It's hard enough to do on the mound, and baseball pitchers are never asked to throw on the run or get tackled.

I hope he can settle in and keep his mechanics in order. In the game thread, posters suggested two drops occurred (at least possibly) because of Collins increased velocity compared to Angeli in the same throws... If that's true, 5/8 looks a lot better than 3/8 when it comes to accuracy.

It also means a week of practice can fix any rhythm or communication issues that came from replacing the QB mid series.

I hope Ricky takes the job and runs with it but he's not at LSU and lost out to Angeli here for a reason. Carney can sling it has a much bigger arm and SU wants to throw a lot. It's not a big leap.
There is a big difference between slinging it in HS...and slinging it in college. Ricky was more highly regarded coming out of HS than Carney based on rankings. If Carney shows he is better than Ricky at leading the Cuse, then I am all for it...Like Fran, I just want to win.

Our backup QB forced into action was a 4 star recruit that saw the field a little bit at LSU.

We’ve come a long way since Braden Davis, Mitch Kimble, Clayton Welch, Rex Culpepper, Austin Wilson, AJ, Long, etc.
Long was the kid that got the Syracuse bicep tattoo right? Did he ever see the field? I don’t remember lol.

Quick thoughts: Angelli was really coming into his own and was quickly building confidence. Really stinks to see him go down like that. Wishing him a quick recovery.

With Rickie, I think they need to keep it simple. I trust Nixon to incorporate what he does well. Though my viewings of him are limited, I’ve noticed that his mechanics and feet tend to be all over the map which leads in inconsistent accuracy. He has arm talent and seems athletic enough to be solid but the key will be limiting what we ask of him to start.

I think Carney would he the #2 if he wasn’t a true freshman. His biggest limitation seems to be size and experience.

With that said, I rooting hard for Rickie. He handled Angelli winning the job with all class and that goes a long way in the locker room.

I am concerned that Rickie will come in and try to force it too much as he did in the Colgate game. Especially in front of a sold out dome after a big win. However, I fully expect him to relax and play and be just fine. However long that takes is the mystery. Could be a few possessions, it could be a few games.

Ricky's gonna get a long look to and obviously a long first crack at the job. I hope he runs with it but again there's some flaws there which I worry about and why the staff went and got Angeli. Hopefully we don't need Carney but I think he's in play at some point.

All true.

However, he is now the prohibitive starter, and needs to ramp up.

He isn't Angeli.

And he came into a game cold, on the road, against a team that was predicted to win the conference title this season. Tough spot to be in. And he made some plays, and missed a few others.

At least this week, he'll have the entire week in practice to get ready, to be mentally focused, etc.

Angeli's likely injury means he could be out for a long time, and impaired even heading into next season. Stinks that it could derail what has started as a promising season.
