Ridiculously early 2014 SU Football starting lineup/rotation-Offense

Good post. I don't think anyone here was saying Hunt is the next McNabb. But despite his statistical shortcomings, he was giving us a chance to win in most games against teams not named FSU or Clemson. He has a long way to go. But the kid is a winner, and the team responds to him like a leader.

And of course HCSS will open up the competition next year. Every kid will get a chance. There are no locked up positions. That includes QB.

Thanks. It is clear that his team mates believe he gave them the best chance this year.

I'm holding out hope that another off season working with McDonald plus better weapons could really speed up his development. I genuinely like the kid. But if one of the other 4 can be better, quicker?

Almost a certainty that Hunt will have better weapons next season -- with the exception of lacking a bruising runner (Smith). Parris, Estime, Broyld, Cornelius -- all on the up-swing as players, and at least one of the young WRs will emerge and contribute. WR is one position where frosh can play early (Sales, Lemon, Williams -- all did).

Sure, "if one of the 4 ..." but what are the odds of that? Based on what observations of any of the 4?

There are a lot of WR's coming in this year. Be interesting to see who starts and who plays the most next year at that position. I think the freshman we have coming in at WR and QB are better than the talent we currently have on the roster. Should be a good battle.

ummm... Hunt is a THIRD YEAR SOPHOMORE.

My only point was if we don't get the ball back on Saturday - no one is commenting on Hunt's "improvement."

Its amazing what 1 drive or 1 play can do to a fan base's perception of things. If Parris gets tackled at the 5, Mcdonald is run out of town and Hunt struggles to be starter next year.
Why would we want to take away a great winning drive from a QB? If you take away the good stuff, he looks bad. I don't want to punish the qb just because the defense made a stop.

He had a 119 rating before the last drive with 63 yards rushing.

That is a big improvement over where he was and it would've matched nassib's best conference game in 2010

Hunt is solid as the 2014 QB. Who is the competition? Red-shirt frosh, program guys (good recruits but not Donny McPherson), who no one has seen even in a scrimmage?
Are we sure they're just program guys? I've got to believe if we keep bringing in 3 and 4 star QBs at some point one of them is going to be really good.

taking away the good stuff is an asinine thing to do.

true dat.

just dont think he is in the drivers seat for the starting job next year. Doesnt mean he wont get it either. also doesnt mean he wont improve.

I also think we might have seen a slightly more efficient Hunt this season had Wales been able to play at 100%.

Not sure where it will factor in, but didn't Flemming get a redshirt and supposed to be back next year?

I'd like to think Bromley gets drafted after his good year. Spruill should also have a shot.

I would love it if the Giants drafted Spruil.. That kid is an absolute ballhawk with great closing speed. Sometimes, I'm in awe watching some of the plays he makes. Yes, he is undersized, but he fits that new hybrid OLB off the edge. A smaller version of Von Miller.

i'm with you on that. he's getting better but that doesn't mean someone else won't already be better by spring

Had West stepped up, and been as good as either Lemon, or Sales, Hunt would have had a much easier time. If their was a disappointment in player development that would have been the one, if he comes back,he needs to step up to the plate as a go to guy. Hopefully West comes back , has that breakout senior season, according to Cornelius, West showed great leadership in taking him under his wing looking at tape, and telling him how to play the position. Senior leadership with all the youngsters would be a great thing, and would like West to have that enjoyable final year.

Not to quibble, but who is the 4 star QB on our roster or commit list? When we bring in 2 and 3 stars, we should expect them to need a couple of years in the program to develop (as Hunt & Nassib did).

If anyone doubts the impact that good WRs can have on a QB's passing stats, look at Andrew Robinson's final start of 2007 and his first start of 2008. Then also realize that in that first game of 2008, we could actually run the ball a little bit better.

Lets not all pile on West. There were AT LEAST 5-7 times West would be WIDE OPEN down field (each would have resulted in the possibility of a TD) and TH just threw the ball way over his head or was entirely off target.

With a more experienced/or more accurate passer...West has a respectable/to good season this year (saved by the 2nd half of the season).

Man this thread is all over the place.

If Hickey returns, that's 4 starters on the OL. QB, all the RB's, Broyld, Cornelius, Cooper/Williams/Custis etc coming in. Another spring of practice and playbook learning. And this was a learning experience for the coaches, all taking on bigger roles and in new situations.

Frankly I'm happy they went 6-6 and next year I'm hoping for 7-5/8-4.

Honestly this entire season rested on the defense. In games that the defense dominated, we usually won. In games where the defense was so-so or bad we lost. The offense could have bailed Syracuse out on those so-so days and won but it didn't. Defense won the games this year despite the ineptitude of the offense. The Pitt game is a perfect example of this. The defense held Pitt to 239 yards and two turnovers and we still lost. Several drives into the + side of the field with no points. If the offense is average this year this team is likely 8-4. If there isn't someone on the roster that can unseat Hunt as the starter next year then we can expect another average year.

If Hickey's back and/or his replacement is capable, i think we'll be good on offense. The only major loss would be Macky and Emerich looked okay when he was in. We're losing more on Defense.

The return of Jerome would be huge in the leadership department IMO. Spruill and Bromley were the defensive leaders this season. Biggest hole will be leaders on D. The calls made by the MLB seem to be very important in this D. Can Hodge or Luke step in? They both seem physically capable, can they handle the intellectual part? To me this will be the key to next years D.
