In today’s environment of the portal and Pay-to-play (yes, that’s what it is), what would it take for a player to make his way up onto the Dome wall at some point? Does a one year portal player have a chance? Does a kid have to play four years here and never transfer?

I’m thinking it has suddenly gotten much harder for kids to earn lifetime accolades.

Interesting question. If for example only, McCord came back and had another great year (high end bowl or playoff), would his 2 excellent years push his number up on the wall? What if he gets drafted after a year 2 scenario in the 1st round? How about now?

The athletic department seems like they're attempting to catch up from prior regimes falling way behind in honoring all-time greats. Freeney and Coach Mac were this year. Schwartzwalder the year prior. GMAC and Warrick, Louie and 'bowie,' few lacrosse players, etc.

Feel like we have a few more years of at least one addition for football (and probably a lot of years of lacrosse) to catch up. Basketball feels in better shape. Don't think Marvin Harrison or Art Monk is up there yet with jerseys. Coach P in ring of honor alongside Ben and Coach Mac makes sense too.

Ring of Honor should be nearly impossible even for a 4 year kid. Retired Jersey sure, but Ring it needs to be program defining. I don't think Melo should make it. I don't think McNabb should make it.
So basically in your eyes two heismans and a title is about all that can get you in the ring of honor.

I agree you need to do something otherwordly, but if McNabb doesn’t deserve it, I don’t really know who in our history should be honored then.

Whether I agree or disagree with your examples, I agreed with your basic idea. It seems like previous threads on this topic show people just want to repeat all the honored numbers in the Ring of Honor. The Ring of Honor is for the elite.

On 2nd thought, I think because of his NFL career and his involvement with SU after playing, McNabb does deserve it.

The problem with any add is how do you also not add X. There needs to be a separation. McNabb's play was legendary. But to the younger generation so was Dungey. What about Graves who led more successful teams than McNabb and had more career passing yards? Or McPherson? How do you separate these guys?

Non QBs we have NFL HoFers in Freeney, Ringo, Csonka, Mackey, Monk, Harrison. Are we adding all of them? Heck Mackey has an award named after him. What about Joe or Reyes who have all of our rushing records? Rob Moore? Tim Green? Chandler Jones? Gary Anderson? Coach P?

Same with BBall. How do you separate Melo from GMac and Hak? DC and Owens? Wallace who single handedly took us to a title game?

Melo did have the NBA and the Melo Center so I suppose you can use that to add him and not the others.

Edit

Also part of the problem is we have two sports in the same stadium/arena. Makes it even harder to add to the ring. If it was just a football stadium or just a BBall arena you could be more lenient.

Edit II

I forgot you also have Lax. So you also have the Gaits and Powells. There isn't enough room for everybody.

Really Tim Green was the Pearl of the Football side. They had the same impact to the programs. He probably deserves it just as much.

McNabb, Melo, Gary Gait, Mikey Powell are all similar.

But back to the original topic, how can anyone in 1-2 years really get on par with any of these guys? They would need to win a title or be player of the year. Or go onto the pros and be considered one of the GOATs.

I think whoever is being honored needs to show up for it if they are alive. If the honoree isn’t going to do that, it minimizes the PR and marketing value to the school. As a result, I think we’re decades away from Marvin Harrison being honored. I hope I’m wrong and Harrison would come…I just think it’s very unlikely.

If McCord comes back and does well in the NFL I could see him being up there eventually.

Two years makes sense. There are lots of guys that have not been big contributors until their junior and senior years in old way of things, so a transfer that tears it up for two years could feel similar.

Dwight Freeney showed flashes his first two years but really didn't have a big impact until his last two and he fits on that list.

Great player but IMO given the lack of spaces he shouldn't make it. I think there are at least 6 FB guys ahead of him. Not to mention BBall and Lax.

That doesn't mean he doesn't belong. It just means we have catching up to do because the ring of honor is such a recent thing. If there are any defensive players on it, he's probably no lower than #2 in line behind Green.
