NBA great Gus Williams, who led Sonics to lone championship, dead at 71

Seattle SuperSonics great Gus Williams, who led the team to its only NBA Championship in 1979, has died. He was 71.

One of the first greats to come out of Mt. Vernon, NY. Played on the great high school team with his brother Ray, Earl Tatum and Syracuse's Rudy Hackett.

I saw Rodney and Scooter McCray's Mt. Vernon high school team play and they were really good, but I would think they would struggle with Gus' team.

His brother Ray also died young from colon cancer.

Gus was really good and played on that great Sonics team that won the championship.

Williams starred at the University of Southern California before spending 11 seasons in the NBA and leading Seattle to the 1979 title.

He should have been in the HOF years ago. The league tries to bury the mid to late 70s era.
