Walter Reyes vs. Notre Dame, Dec. 6, 2003: SU had lost three consecutive games, among them a 24-7 stinker at Rutgers, to put Pasqualoni squarely on the hot seat at 5-6 when Notre Dame visited the Carrier Dome. One more loss could have forced the issue.
Thanks in large part to Reyes, Coach P got a reprieve. Held to 33 yards and one touchdown on nine carries in the first half, the junior tailback exploded for 156 yards and four touchdowns in the second to trigger a 38-12 rout. His biggest run was a 71-yarder in the third quarter that occurred only 17 seconds after the Irish had scored on a 48-yard interception return.
“It took their breath away,” Reyes said of the run.
Reyes’ five TDs tied Floyd Little for second place on SU’s career list for most rushing TDs in a game. Jim Brown had six vs. Colgate in 1956. His 189 yards gave him 1,347 rushing yards for the season, only 25 shy of Joe Morris’ school record of 1,372, set in 1979.
