RIP Walter Reyes

Probably my favorite player of the modern era. I can't remember what year, who we were playing, etc. but Reyes got a hand off, off-tackle right, ran into a huge pile of bodies, typical 3 yds and a cloud type of play, then out of nowhere he slipped out the other side and broke it the whole way to the endzone. One of the most impressive runs I've ever witnessed in person. Rest in peace Walter, our hearts are broken. #39

Man, I am shocked. He lived down the street from me on South Campus my sophomore year. He was the first football player who I got to know decently, and he was dating one of my friends. He was always around, but he was always focused on his work, never partied, and was very low key. Tragic that he died so young...

Very sad. I have a few friends who grew up around there at the same time as Reyes and everybody knew who he was. Long line of football history and legacies in Ytown but it is a very rough and dark place. Think Gary maybe worse.

Im in a state of shock right now, one of my favorite Su players ever, he could have won a heisman if he played on some better teams, rip Walter.

Unbelievable, Walter was my first SU football superstar. A lot of people don't know the "13" in my screen name was actually originally chosen because I was 13 years old when I signed up for this board. I am 25 now, which put coming here at 2005. Walter was there when I was becoming the kind of fanatic who would come to a place like this. Him and Diamond Ferri will forever have special places in my heart for that.

Sad. Many great games. Especially the ND game where he tore them up. RIP Walter.

Really sad news. That's way too young. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a great football player at SU.

I saw that there’s a GoFundMe page to cover funeral costs if anyone is interested.

I get to spend the day there tomorrow. Hooray me.

He was great.

Damn. One of my favorite SU players of all time (if my moniker didnt make that obvious). One of the guys that solidified me as an SU diehard when I was in my teens.

RIP bud. Thanks for all the memories.

If you have some time to kill go to Jimmy’s on Belmont Ave. You can eat there and get a good ole sausage and hot pepper sub. They also have cheap and good sheet pizzas by the square. The old ladies still churn out handmade pastas, raviolis, etc., there.

I still remember the year we recruited him, wondering whether we'd get Diamond Ferri OR Walter Reyes, and being so excited to land both.

I thought for sure Reyes was going elsewhere -- was pleasantly surprised when we landed him.

I've had the pleasure of watching a ton of terrific running backs at SU of varying talent levels -- from Joe Morris, Robert Drummond, Malcolm Thomas, James Mungro, Dee Brown, Rob Konrad, David Walker -- but it is entirely possible that Reyes was the best of them all [at least in my lifetime]. Really too bad that his shoulder dislocation injury happened when it did, or he might have been discussed as being right up there with the all time program greats we've had carry the ball.

Not going to this leg...will be in Boardman/Canfield. Will definitely next trip through.

Do you still live in NE OH?

One of the last great backs from when we ran the ball effectively...

I am yes. That’s a nice part of suburban Youngstown. White House Farms in Canfield is worth checking out. Fruit farm. All kinds of goodies made from their fruits/veggies. Makes nice gifts. Can’t go wrong with the blueberry donuts there, pies, jams, hot sauces, pickled stuff, etc.

I’ll check it out. We just relocated to Cleveland a few months back. Live in Chagrin Falls - love the area so far.
