Roster & Needs As Of April 14...

Well this isn’t a project 5. He’s a defensive 5 man with a high ceiling. I think it’s a little harder to project the next move be it Folefac or a stretch 4. This is not some project though at all. I’d love a Freeman type with this kid and Goodrick but need to read the tea leaves. I would have expected a more post offensive euro so this is a bit different than expected.

You don’t have the kind of praise and comments from Givony and the DX guys if he was just a project. I don’t think folks quite understand they aren’t wasting their time to comment on a kid if he is another Pascal Chukwu.

Fair enough.
High ceiling = project IMO. No idea about Chukwu.
I like the potential.
Point is, he has work to do.
Not starting a linguistics war.
Am hoping for a complete player at the 4/5 spot, in the 6'9 230 range.

Yeah this guy should still be the backup 5 out of the gate unless proven otherwise during the year but have to recruit for the starter

Goodrick?

I wonder if this addition means we're out of the running for Folefac. In which case, any additional bigs we add could be 4/5 combos [like Freeman].

It all comes down to this. We are getting who Gerry wants for this team. And what Gerry wants is good enough for me,

But…. are we?

How do we know what Gerry wanted?

Maybe there are players he wanted even more,
but we swung and missed.

Maybe there are players he wanted,
but we couldn’t compete in NIL.

Maybe there are players he wanted,
but they wouldn’t commit to an unproven P4 HC in his very first rodeo at this level.

You cannot assume that every player we signed,
is THE GUY that Gerry wanted most, at every position.

Exactly, it’s fair to assume Gerry is not handpicking his top targets right now at every position. No one really does year one. Getting guys he wants, absolutely, and that’s really important. But here below is what will change when you start to implement the culture and systems showing success and maximizing the talent of the guys you do have:

“Maybe there are players he wanted,

You will start to get to handpick more when your start to prove it. The proving it is the part where everyone is like wow, Gerry is getting every ounce of talent out of his guys. If he’s doing that for this guy imagine what he can do for me.

I print out the roster to "follow along" each season while watching at home, or take it to the game with me. Even before the transfer portal days.
I was fine in the pre portal days when there were just a few new names, many of them hyped for ages before actually attending. Now every year there’s a new crop with maybe 2 or 3 from a larger roster who are returning. By the beginning of the season, I used to know who was who. It’s funny how confused I could sometimes become identifying them if they changed their hair styles, 😀

That is in the Serbian League against grown men. He averaged 18 and 11 in the U19 league. I would expect him to come off the bench, but he's not a total project player like some here are implying. He will get minutes.

I think we still need a starting center (Freeman seems doubtful if he left campus), a starting point guard, and a backup forward. I would prioritize the guard at this point, and hope Folefac comes around.

Any news on the ruling for Nate Kingz eligibility? Is he still a roster possibility? What happens if the transfer portal is closed by the time the NCAA makes a decision?

I think we’re done looking for a point guard. I think GMAC feels his guards are somewhat interchangeable.

Positionally, sure. But there's offensive skills (shooting, initiation) that this team needs more of. He has to recognize that, as currently constructed, they would struggle to score 60 against most of the ACC. Should be competitive on D though, which will be a nice change.

And maybe I am underrating Moesch - I'm only expecting him to see the floor under dire circumstances.

Why do I need to see that name again??????

I too think GMAC is set with the guards and likes that they are interchangeable. Doesn't seem to be room for Kingz. My hope is we get some interior muscle - too many beanpoles which is becoming the norm.

I don’t think he wants a ball dominant PG to that point. Multiple guards that can initiate the offense to eliminate the need to constantly force your PG to have to re initiate if the look you wanted isn’t there.

With that said this is why it’s going to be important in terms of finding an offensively adept big. Using that big as both a low post threat and a release point to get paint touches and kickouts is definitely a part of what I expect he wants to do using a constant motion style offense. VCU ran something a bit similar to that. I don’t know if anyone realized that Martelli did not pigeon hole any of his guards into the PG spot. Not one guard averaged over 2.8 apg yet as a team they averaged 14 apg ( we were at 12.8 last year)

Remember that this isn’t just Gerry putting his influence on the guys being brought in. Offensively there is clearly going to be influence from Daly who has the best offensive reputation of the staff. How we are approaching building the roster has a Daly flavor to it in my view and that is in having multiple initiators on the court and not leaning so heavily on a specific PG. It looks to be an effort to blend that offensive mindset with a very solid defensive team as well that has athletes to take advantage and push when needed.

There is a lot of focus on names instead of how this team being built continues to make sense. The starting C is that last key piece plus another shooter in my eyes. From there a couple flyers that are bargains but could be a gem or just practice body to gamble on.

A month ago a lot of us talked about wanting PMJ as our coach and loved how his teams play on the offensive end. So much skepticism is floating around here about Gerry and our offense yet we have a key part of how PMJ ran his offense in Daly. Gotta remember this isn’t Siena 2.0 even in the slightest outside those guys being able to help and set the culture. This is a team being built in the mold of a Martelli/Gmac like offense and Brunt/Lee/Gerry defense.

100%

I agree with those who think we’re done with the point guard position. Our needs now are the best center we can get and a true power forward. (A guy with Souares size that can play center or power forward, with some actual offensive skill). We should be able to get very good production with $3-4 million or so for those two positions. I’m really not sold on White. Many people say he was a great defender, but I didn’t see him as more than a little above average, and thought he often was lazy off the ball on offense and defense, and not as polished as I was hoping for. We need a true 4 who can do more than catch alley oops and shoot threes. I think our most glaring need is help at the big positions, not guard or wing.

Anthony, Tobiason, Doty and MMM set at wing with tobiason maybe playing a few minutes of point if Ryan not ready to contribute much.

I’ve given up trying to predict if we are going to be good or not. Thought last year was a lock and it wasn’t. Conversely teams like Clemson or Seton Hall (with good coaching) seemed to dramatically overachieve based on the perception of their talent. Hopefully the combination of McNamara‘s coaching, team effort and chemistry produces a winner.
