Rot in hell uconn women's basketball

It’s a football game, might be worst officiated game I have ever seen. One girl literally came down on another girls back and no whistles.
officials in women's bball is the dregs, doesn't really get any worse. There are a few that are fair but man, I've seen many time and again that are just bad. Really bad,

I find myself in a very odd position. Even though I hate all things UConn, partly out of envy, I have always liked and respected Geno- straight shooter, does not suffer fools, demands excellence and effort bringing out the best in his players, and will not tolerate any overblown egos that detract from the concept of team he inculcates year after year.

Funny you say that. I like and respect winners. Guys that find a way to win, even if they are coloring outside the lines. Guys like Belichick and Pitino. But I don't like bullies. Guys like Geno and Bobby Knight. They are nothing but bullies.

I'm not trying to turn this into a male vs female but it's pretty ironic that most of the other successful women's coaches are all female, Summitt, Vanderveer, Staley, Mulkey. Then you have Geno Auriemma. Big bad bully. Try that schtick in the Men's game and he wouldn't last long. Eventually he would self-destruct. Like Danny Hurley. Eventually he's going to piss off the right person.

OMG. UConn should fire him. That was horrible. Went after Staley with 8 seconds left. . Was pulled away, and came back at her. And then walked off the court at the end with no hand shake.
One down. Would love to see Hurley implode

Big East basketball is killing UCONN. There’s no competition and play is soft. The SEC is very physical and Geno’s team couldn’t handle it tonight. Good or bad, that’s the way it is.
Good point. Only one other Big East women’s program even made the NCAA tournament this year- Villanova who was a 10th seed lost in the first round to 7th seed Texas Tech who then got demolished by over 50 points by LSU. Not really any credible competition from their own conference in 20 games to even play different offensive and defensive talents and schemes.

UConn playing their Big East Conference games at home in Connecticut - certainly doesn’t toughen competition when you play your qualifying tournament games in your home state. Then the NCAA bows to them and gives them home games even through at least the 2nd round in the NCAA tournament. They are no doubt a great program but shouldn’t be given additional advantages for conference tournament and the NCAA tournament..UConn doesn’t challenge themselves by playing their top OOC competition in games away from Connecticut , why not? They played this year ,Louisville and Iowa at neutral sites, Fla St, Loyola of Chicago, Ohio St, Michigan and Utah all in Connecticut, and only S. Florida and USC away. It’s an advantage for their seeding but isn’t a way to test your team when faced with disadvantages.

Too bad we have a final four of 4 #1 seeds and Geno couldn't help himself from being a poor sport baby to steal all the spotlight.
And that first sentence is the problem with the women’s game. Not much parity to be had. All chalk. The talking heads like to hype it up that there is depth of competition, but there is still a huge gap between the name programs and even the next tier. There might be two or three real serious contenders each year, and two more who are very close. But the parity is a fantasy. Parity in the men’s game is bought these days.

I think the women’s game will start morphing to something more like the men’s game (not good) if and when more $$ is invested by donors. On the one side, you may see some new power teams move up and others start to drop, with a new shuffle at the top each year. On the other, it’ll be a world of losing favorite players every year, and programs that were already struggling to develop identities and draw fans will be that much farther in the hole. I’m sure there were fans here that were looking forward to watching Burrows and Potts and Shy next season. Now what? How do you market your team when everyone leaves?

One final point, I really hate what the terrible officiating has turned the women’s game into. The level of physicality they allow only sours the purity of the game. It’s like when the NHL and NBA of the early 90’s allowed the goons to take out the stars. The games became slugfests. I used to tell my middle school and JV boys teams in the late 90’s if they really wanted to see the basics done right (screens, passing, etc.) watch D1 women’s college games. I fear that game will be gone with the WNBA’s fascination with roller derby.

No recognition of Coach Staley, just the S.C "staff".

That's an I only apologized because I was made to apology.
Replacing the old Pat Summitt - Geno Auriema bitter rivalry. He’s lucky that he hasn’t met up with Kim Mulkey - he might still be lying on the court beaten by a sequined feather. 😋

Congrats to Geno. Not easy making Staley a sympathetic figure but he managed to pull it off.
I've always liked Dawn Staley. She does all kinds of volunteer work in her home town of Philly.

Love her Point Guard mentality.

Yup. Whoever advised him is just as bad as he is. What a POS. How hard is it to type "I apologize to Coach Staley and the SC program for my behavior and wish them luck tomorrow in the finals".

That was pretty easy.

Well he did head bump an official which should have gotten him tossed and two free throws at the very end of the game which could have changed the result.
How Hurley got away with that amazes me. Basically, assaulting an official. Duke should have had an opportunity to shoot a technical. Hurley makes me cringe as does Gino.

Fair enough.

She starts riding and cursing at the refs as soon as she gets off the bus. Gets old. Also didn't like her role in canceling a two game series against BYU a few years ago over unproven allegations of racism that supposedly occurred at a BYU/Duke volleyball game.
