Rutgers conference expansion rumor

I do not care for Rutgers as a whole and their fan base has irked me in the past 10 yrs but I do feel bad for them. They had some momentum with football and now they are looking at an unknown football future. You can bet there would be some people on this board saying the same if we were left out. I think this whole conference realignment stinks by they way. Certain schools calling shots with no regard to college football landscape or traditions or rivals. The movement has been going on for years but I sick of some of the schools that get to call shots.

I know it is controversial but I agree. You invest a lot of yourself as a college football fan. There are a lot of fans who got the shaft in the reorgs. I feel genuinely sorry for them.

While I will enjoy the ACC (it is a far better place than where we have been), a part of me will always pine for what could have been, a conference with

Penn State
Pittsburgh
West Virginia
Virginia Tech
Syracuse
Rutgers
Temple
Boston College
Maryland
FSU
Miami
Connecticut

This conference was very doable. Throw in ND for Connecticut if you really want a perfect setuo.

It would have been far better than the ACC of today, at least as good as the Pac10 and would have made a lot of money. If only Paterno wasn't such an idiot, if only he had a sense of intelligence and compromise, it would have happened. His judgement was awful from day one...the Sandusky scandal was just another example. This mess where Eastern teams should have been in one conference but ended up distributed in 4 different ones is mostly on him.

Kinda sad actually...

I mean if we hadn't gotten into the ACC, I'm sure some crackpots around here would be spreading rumors about how JoePa left us a spot in the B1G in his will.

It's been Penn State and Paterno, in particular, that has been pushing the Big Ten to expand Eastward. He specifically mentioned SU and Rutgers at different times.

Any clout that Penn State might have had in the B1G has now been reduced to zero. None. Nada. Zilch. The rest of the B1G doesn't even want to hear the name Penn State let alone do Penn State any favors.

So the school that might have lobbied hardest for Rutgers has evaporated.

Seriously, SUfanNC, what "tradition" do Rutgers or UConn have?

If Rutgers has any tradition its associated with playing Lehigh, Colgate and Princeton and they didn't blink an eye leaving them in the dust.

I know my post is a little scattered. I wasn't really refering to Rutgers when I went on the tradtion tangent. I should have seperated into another paragraph. I was talking about all the confrence realignement and losing some tradional games etc..

The Rutgers part was my opinion of casting stones at them because of their desolate future.

Simple solution for Rutgers. B1G bounces PSU and replaces them with Rutgers. I expect the Rutgers coaching staff to start recruiting on that scenario in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1

It is hindsight but it would have been nice if the major Indies all created their own conference. I don't think MD would have left the ACC at the time. And UConn was worthless at the time. But the other ten schools would have made a nice conference. It would have allowed for 9 FB and 18 BBall games in conf. Although that would have been a crappy BBall conf and we wouldn't be where we are today. So that is a draw back. Also who the hell knows what happens in terms of realignment.

Actually, that is what the UConn folks are saying about themselves. Sad really...

Good post: however:

1) FSU is an excellent fit in an ACC with regional schools like Clemson and GT and UNC, as is Miami.

2) VT is at home with UVA and the North Carolina schools.

3) PSU is a great fit with the huge Big 10 state schools.

4) I think the current ACC is in many ways an ideal mix; however at the risk of departing from the current spin by some, I would like to see RU as an ACC member as well. They are the state University of NJ, an excellent school academically and a great regional rival in an important market, where there are a large number of SU students and alumni and potential students and recruits. Despite the "expert" opinions of some, I would expect them to be considered by the Big 10 when the Big 10 TV renegotiation occurs in 2016 and as the ACC expansion into the northeast becomes more apparent.

At this point, the ACC is unlikely to further expand absent a strong consensus; the key immediate goal is to consolidate the new teams into the mix, establishing rivalries and demonstrating the benefits of the new north-south coastal conference, which I believe will end up being far more sucessful than many expect.

5) ND should stay independent until they decide otherwise; that is what they want.

I really don't understand the "open spot" logic. The Big Ten played with 11 teams for over a decade. It's not a problem for them to have an odd number of teams. There's no rule that says the Big Ten must have X (10, 12, 14, 16) teams. So why would they want Rutgers (or UCONN) if Penn St. gets bounced? They add no value.

I am absolutely sure that the SEC just can't believe their luck -- to be able to still have a chance to lock up the USC of the East.

Good post: however:

You're measuring it against current conference alignments. Tom's point (I believe) was that conference was achievable back in the 70s or 80s.

Just adding some content in the spirit of the op. NOT being serious.

If and when PSU gets booted from the B1G, New Jersey is no loner a "contiguous State" with the rest of the B1G.

But it doesn't matter to the Rutgers coaches who are no doubt suggesting and implying all sorts of conference scenarios to recruits.

In Animal House, after Flounder's brother's car is trashed on that roadtrip, Otter suggests he say the car was stolen.

Flounder asks if Otter thinks his brother will buy that story.

Flounder says, "Its gotta be better than the truth".

"SEC to NYC/NE market for alumni"

This is crazy. I've been working in NYC for 15 years now and I don't see/hear anything that would lead me to believe there is much of an alumni base from SEC schools other than a small pocket from Vandy. Furthermore, I can watch 2-3 SEC games each week either on ABC or ESPN.
florida.

go to the gin mill for gameday.

as a matter of fact leave now, or you wont get in. not only there, but in any of the bars near it that take the overflow.

incredible scene.

Rutgers fans should look at the bright side. If, in fact, the SEC wants to add the NYC market, then they will add Syracuse, and that could open up a spot in the ACC.

Those night games in Baton Rouge are going to be worth the invite alone.

If I'm Rutgers, I start a bidding war between the B1G, the $EC, and the BEVO, making sure to ask all quite publicly whether they want Rutgurls to drag Notre Dame along with as a "plus one" or not.

My guess is, "not". I mean, once a major conference can add the State University of New Jersey, it's endgame time for all of this realignment nonsense.

I hear you. But you hear the open spot argument a lot, so I thought I'd raise the issue.

My sources tell me that Oklahoma is in discussions for their Big 12 exit fee for joining the Big Ten and replace Penn State.

Rutgers would be in the SEC or B1G tomorrow if they could figure out a way to join the league and not actually, you know, have to schedule any of the teams in the league.

They do not want to burn the bridges to the likes of Howard, Kent St, Norfolk St., Morgan St., Fla International, Texas Southern, North Carolina Central, and Polk High

What happen to PSU if they are dropped by B1G? What conference picks them up after they serve their suspension? ACC, SEC BIG12. They surely wouldn't go back to B1G if they are dropped

This Oklahoma rumor is starting to get legs. I hear it alot lately. Must be some truth to it. I also heard one stipulation is they want Rutgers as a travel partner and as a means of opening the Northeast to them for recruiting.

You gotta be kidding, right?

Penn State is a long way from being out of the B1G. And on the basis of the slim, unprecedented chance that this might occur, Oklahoma is asking how much the Big12 would take to let them out of their contract? And this is plausible to you?

If you are depending on this particular source for any other information (e.g.stock tips), I suggest you reconsider that strategy.

I lived in Dallas for a number of years ... close to Oklahoma. My sense is that Oklahoma is much more like Texas than Nebraska. It's more southwestern than it is prairie state. "Okie from Muskogee" says it all.

One of the best bumper stickers down there had an OU banner on it and the words ... 7th Flag over Texas"

Sources have reported OU has been in contact with the B1G over joining before the possibility of PSU getting the death penalty even arose.

Also, those sources are just people on our board trying to start rumors like "the dude" from WVU... aka - it's a joke
