Rutgers fan here. I read this thread with interest, because I'm not a fan of building a program with transfers. However, this year and this time is different. When Rutgers used to get transfers, they would come from places like Nassau Community College, or sometimes kids that were at big time programs, but really weren't performing. More often than not, they didn't pan out, but they were sometimes used as a temporary stopgap measure.
Why are things different now? Two words - Transfer Portal. It's really a game changer, and when Schiano was hired, he had already identified several high caliber candidates from schools like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. HIs plan seems to be working, and transfers have made meaningful contributions and have had a very significant impact.
Let's face it, Rutgers football has been terrible for the last four years. The blowouts were embarrassing, and the team needed an immediate infusion of talent to become competitive. Schiano's plan is working, and even when we are able to rebuild our roster, I bet that Schiano will continue to mine the transfer portal. I don't think that the NUMBER of transfers will resemble what we have now, but I'm sure that Schiano will continue to snag some highly rated transfer prospects. Schiano is known for identifying and recruiting talented players, as well as incredible attention to detail and preparation. That alone will turn the program around.
I think that Babers is also a good choice for Syracuse. Many alums wanted him at Rutgers. You are having a tough year now, but Babers will have the team back. I'm looking forward to continuing our series in the next few years. I think that the teams should play each other every year - it would be good for both programs and fans in our region.
