Ryan Cabiles Canned / Robert Harris new Director of S&C

Obi Wan Kenobi Hello GIF by Star Wars

Will Hicks. Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a looong time.
He's been mentioned on the football side. I believe people have said Fran has him involved. So now we get to like him again.

We all love Cal and UK now that we got this guy? Is that where we landed?

Just want to check in on who we hate / who we like now.

JK.

All joking aside, glad they are trying something different. Assuming SU and co have done their job vetting his background on the incidents noted.

Austin Peay is definitely an interesting step on his path given his background that gives pause but he’s hardly the first guy to have a setback and reboot to being successful.

Freeman has come a long way on his own. Part of his rise up the recruiting rankings was his physique going from “skinny tall kid” to “athletic build.” Over the 12 months before arriving at Syracuse, he changed a lot.

He's still got a ways to go.

There was also that game before he got injured where the opposing team's point guard ripped the ball away from him under the basket and sent him flying into the stands across the baseline when he did it.

Getting fired from an SEC program and going to Austin Peay is a big drop. He lost his ish at his daughter’s sporting event and the video went semi-viral. He was radioactive for a while after that.

I’m guessing his daughter is grown and so girl’s playing fields in Syracuse will be safe.

EDIT: I couldn’t find the video, but here’s the Kentucky basketball thread about it. I don’t recommend it, it’s just like all of our worst threads.

Good point, he should be 20 lbs heavier in no time… My point is that he’s also gained a ton of weight, even before our S&C program.

Go to Syracuse Athletics. His Bio is now available.
He was at Kentucky for 9 years, must count for something. I don't think I have ever seen this board with so much sarcasm and doubt about the BB program and people they hire. You have to give people a chance. Even those who come out of a D1 school in Clarksville, TN

How exactly was I being sarcastic or negative? I was being objective and mostly positive in my comments.

idk if this makes sense, but this year feels more like year one under a new coach than Autry's actual year one. Using fresh NIL money and a young GM to flip the entire roster and then having a new strength coach scream in their faces reminds me of Fran's first offseason.

Agree. I was ready to move on from AA and go completely away from the JB tree for a while but I just want this to work. This offseason feels much better than last years

A million times better! Last offseason we were grasping at straws, just hoping all the different things that needed to go right would come through for us.

This offseason, it feels like everything went right. Good coaching and admin hires, excellent recruiting, a new S&C coach that brings intensity we haven’t seen before…

The roster is so much better, it’s hard to quantify. Even if we have a rash of injuries like last season, we’ll still be able to put a full rotation of P4 quality players out there.

Last season, only a few guys getting hurt sunk the whole season, because their backups weren’t that talented.

Kline, the roster build, new s&c are real positive steps the only concern in Red’s coaching. I know last years team was a mess but there was no identity either offensively or defensively and at times Red seemed disengaged. I hope to see improvements in coaching but they did not bring in any new assistants.

This is the only negative from this offseason. There's openings, JW said Red only had to ask, and apparently he didn't. Use everything you're allowed to make your team the best it can be.

Yeah, we will see.

Is he going to fill the unfilled assistant coaching spots on his staff as well?

He certainly could use some help with the X's and O's.

Seems like he's slowly trying to figure out the job... not sure he's moving fast enough, TBH.

Yeah, after last year's season, if he's not willing or ready to admit he needs help and get that help by filling those spots competently, it will be a real headscratcher.

This offseason and the execution is going to determine Reds future and program direction or at least the near term. While the additional coaching slots are something of concern to me as well, if he succeeds and gets this program where it should be in year 3 now, I would expect piling on guys who plug into that well may come later than we want but logically it makes more sense to have the proof of concept first.

It’s a lot of changes , good changes on paper to be exact, so far. A big part of that is also seeing everyone there for the summer except just the late arriving big man and then Fennell and all due to easy to explain reasons and not mystery lingering injuries.

I don’t think this year hinges on filling out the staff - if it’s not going to work it would be the case irrespective of more coaches, not to mention more coaches that may not be here long if Red isn’t successful.

We'll see.

We had real X's and O's problems last year - it was clearly evident.

It would be mind boggling to me if the AD goes out of his way to say he can have more assistants if he wants them and Red doesn't take him up on that. Wildhack was clearly CYA'ing himself with those comments.

This is year 3 and it's Red's make or break year after all, so if he wants assistant vacancies to remain, so be it.

If he was going to do it, it probably should have been before year 3, as you mention.

X's and O's weren't the biggest problem last year, not having anyone on the team who could play offense and defense was.
The entire team was a bunch of Misfits. Too small, too slow, bad shooters, defenders, not a good passing team.
All in all a mess.

Didn't say it was the biggest problem... there were a number of problems.
