Sadiq White RETURNING

"Sadiq White is in Gerry McNamara's office, and Sadiq White is coming back! Oh my good— goodness gracious! Of all the dramatic things, of all the dramatic things I've ever seen, Sadiq White standing right in Gerry McNamara's office, announcing he is back. Sadiq White is a Syracuse Orange! "
That's the kind of post that brings a tear to my eye.

Yeah, so... Kiyan is gonna start.
Idk man. Doty is a better all around player than Anthony right now. Would need a big jump from Anthony. I guess if you start Anthony at the 2 and Doty at the 3. But if we bring in Wilkins and Wilkinson. Anthony is not starting. Even a player like Wagner would really push Anthony. Or what if we bring in the Mingo brothers? All these are very possible and all these players are already better than Anthony or at least on par with Anthony. Now you could be right, Anthony could gain 5-10 pounds of muscle this off season. He has full off season in the college program and his dad is obviously Melo…..so a big freshman to Sophmore jump is certainly possible. But he needs biggggg improvements defensively, foot speed and strength. He’s going to be fine offensively but those other parts of his game he needs big improvements. Doty is already better than him in most aspects of his game. But if we bring in some other players that I mentioned….

Right now I think we have 2 starters in Doty. Doty will start at the 2 or 3 depending who we bring in. Sadiq at the 4. Anthony, Morano and Goodrich are good pieces off the bench already. I feel pretty confident we will end up with a stud point guard. And think there’s a good shot we end up with a stud shooting guard too. Which would slide Doty to the 3. We will add Folefac too. Interested who we end up with at Center. I think we have a very good shot at Estrella. Would like a little more fire power there too. But Estrella is not a bad player by any means
So a realistic roster is(obviously not exactly but a sample):

Wilkins or Mingo/Dual
Wilkinson/Anthony
Doty/MMM
White/Foleac
Estrella/Goodrich

Maybe another bench piece or two.

Regardless of all of that, how do you not start Melo’s son given what we have heard about the amount of NIL he has supposedly helped to assemble? Plus Kiyan did well when he started and clearly dwindled as the season progressed. As did the rest of the team, with the exception of White, who seemed to improve or at worst stay the same. Kingz also improved throughout the season.

Just looked it up, there are even fewer than I thought. After Coleman only three guys have done it - Melo, the immortal Rick Jackson, and Jesse Edwards.

For some reason I thought Mookie Watkins came close his senior year, but he never even led the team in rebounding.
What’s funny is I thought Rony Seikaly and Rosie Bouie had to have averaged 10 rebounds in a season sometime at SU but no. They were close but they both had other great rebounding teammates too - Rony played 2 years with DC and Rosie played with Louie Orr both who averaged 16 rebounds a game between them for their 4 year careers (8.4/game for Rosie and 7.6/game for Louie). Amazing.

Right? You'd think there are way more. It feels like there should be way more.

Lampkin actually came pretty close.

Etan feels like he did. But he did not.

Yeah, so, uhm, I get what you're saying but... Kiyan's gonna start.

This is a great move by SADIQ. These coaches and system will allow Sadiq to flourish. He’ll be the starting power forward. He’s intense, defensively he’s really good. Things that G-Mac love. He’s obviously reallllly good in the open floor. Who better to coach with some post moves on the block that AO….hes got a decent shot for a power forward something that he can work on. If he can be a consistent 33% 3 point shooter that will be perfect. Not his main part of his game but it’s serviceable. Let him cook in defense and in the open floor. He’s obviously a freak athlete too. But this system and G-macs staff are perfect for Sadiq. He made the smart move, he’ll be making more money in the long run by staying than chasing the bag now

Means we have some serious money still to dish out which is great.

No daddy ball.

He starts if his spot is earned.

You want problems in the lockeroom, start a player based on nepotism. We should all have learned this lesson by now for obvious reasons... and GMAC had a front row seat for it.

Kiyan has A LOT of things to prove in his game to be ready to start... beginning with commitment to defense and toughening up on offensive drives (the layup drive followed by flop on the endline hoping for a foul has to stop. PERIOD.) Drive the basket and be ready to scrap for the rebound if you miss... or switch and track back on defense immediately if you don't get the rebound. Show that you are ready to play at max effort in all facets of the game.

This is all focus and toughness stuff (something most of this year's team lacked, so he wasn't alone.)

15-20 lbs of meat on his frame would also help (hit the weight room and protein shakes, son.)

Exactly. Was just writing something similar so won’t bother. Kiyan maybe he gets his shot if someone gets banged up but he hasn’t shown anything that warrants a starting ACC backcourt gig.

If he wants his mins he’s gonna have to shoot his way onto the court. I don’t see any world where he becomes good enough defensively.

I just can’t see it and I don’t think it’s necessarily nepotism. I think there would be a bigger locker room problem if Kiyan doesn’t start. He’s by far our best known player nationally. I could be completely misreading things though. Doty would seem more to fit the nepotism vibes, even though he’s not related to Gerry. I think Kiyan, Doty, and White at the 2,3, and 4 would work. Again, this is mere speculation on my part.

Love White and so glad he’s returning. That’s huge.

This is shaping up to be a very young team, though, if we’re putting all these freshman and sophomores in key roles. I’ll be curious who else we can land from the portal. We’re going to need 3-4 talented older guys to supplement Kiyan, White, Doty, Folefac, and the new Euro kid, Mark Marano. I would prioritize size and experience with those portal guys.

We need a REALLY good center, and a REALLY good PG if that's the lineup.
We need more scoring.

Laugh all you want, 721Comstock . It will happen and it will be glorious! 🤣 :)

Kiyan was pretty good when he started in place of Donnie. When he no longer started, he seemed more lost. I think he has a huge upside still. He is not Melo, and will not be. Melo understands that Kiyan might not be starting. His money doesn't come with those type of strings attached. But we do have to appreciate what Melo brings to the table, and handle Kiyan fairly and maybe with the slightest benefit of the doubt. I think we have to consider he could be a starter if he shows certain things to Gerry. May not play a ton of minutes though.

Ah, see. There’s a reason we’re friends. I love this post.

And that is entirely fair. Kiyan might improve substantially, and he might earn it. Or, he might not.

If it happens, either Kiyan will have made a meteoric jump in the level of his game (hopefully) to warrant it... or, it's just simply daddy ball pay-to-play... Melo paid, so his son starts...

The kid has legitimate offensive skills, seems willing to work, and should show improvement across the board as a sophomore. Unless Gerry wins the portal lotto, he's going to average at least 20 minutes per game.

Well, if he doesn't play well enough, and shoots 25% from three again, can't get to the rim, and doesn't defend, he won't start for long. Gerry is serious about winning. He's not looking to lose his job.
