Sadiq White RETURNING

I'm glad we have Anthony and White coming back. Its great to have 2 players we know and expect to improve. I know we will have a revamped roster this year. I also think that Doty is a big question mark until he is proven to be able to compete at a higher level. He was good at MAAC. However, I remember a POY for Merrimack (at that time in the NEC) that transferred to UVA for his 5th year. He hardly played. We have to be realistic in our expectations. We should now be carefull regarding the Transfers. After JB last season we won 20 games with the roster he created. After that in the transfer market we sucked.

  • PG TBD
  • SG Kyian Anthony ==>Sophomore was not a starter
  • SF Dotty ==>Junior coming for a lower conference
  • PF Sadiq White ===> Sophomore was not a starter
  • C TBD

Based on this we need high quality fill at PG and Center. Also depth that will play with significant ability to contribute. To be honest, we need Sr. leadership, or leadership in general. Perhaps Dotty has it, TBD...

Again, I love to see returnees, but a significant upgrade is needed all along the watchtower here.

It would be interesting if Dotty becomes a point forward for us like Silent G and T. Battle. That creates significant mismatches on Defense and offense. However, we need to develop the post up game if that occurs.

GO CUSE

Bingo. This ain't the 80s, there doesn't need to be stark delineations between 2, 3 and 4.

Honestly, the only "positions" necessary these days are a primary ball distributor, primary low post defender, wings and/or shooters.
Will be interesting to see how many teams try to replicate Michigans roster. Just get a bunch of giants that can do it all. Obvi we can’t afford that and I doubt anyone will be able to replicate but they’ll prob try.

Either way I just can’t see gmac wanting to play small ball. With AO on staff and the rosters he played on I think he’s gonna want some tall physical dudes at the 4 and 5 and will be willing to trade offense for guys that can pass, defend and rebound.

when not facing a pressing team, i will not be surprised to see doty at the 1 some. he did at siennna. would allow for 2 other wings on the court.
If he wants to bring the ball up the court or push off a rebound sure… otherwise if there is no advantage he can get rid of it and then we run our offense :). I mean if he gets a man on his hip and has a lane to attack the rim that’s fine too.

At any point in time I’d want 3 guys , minimum 2 , comfortable initiating the offense be it on a break or the half court. Obviously your primary ball handler is a pressure release for the others under heavier pressure but overall so long as you have enough shooters and ball handlers on the floor the positions aren’t all that big of a deal 1-3.
Yep. Look at the NBA these days and many teams run their offense through a guy whose position is formally categorized as a 2, 3 or 4.

At any given time on the floor we need 2-3 guys who can handle the rock under pressure, 2-3 guys who can bang competitively underneath for boards, and 2-3 guys who can knock down shots from the perimeter. Obviously, there's overlap!

To bring it back to this thread, White can do two of those, hence his value in returning.

Don't forget about 3M. I assume he's starting. And I assume Doty is starting.

I'm not worried about traditional positions, I think these two are locks to be in the starting lineup, despite playing the same position [2].
Weren't you scoffing at the idea that Doty would start for us a couple days ago?

Celtics have at least 4 guys who regularly bring the ball up and initiate the offense. I’m all for it. Put the pressure on the defense to react.

It’s all history now but if only Marek could have been a consistent 3pt threat- love to have a 6-10 dude who could handle it and be a point forward who also didn’t have to defend bigs 100 lbs heavier

Right? You'd think there are way more. It feels like there should be way more.

Lampkin actually came pretty close.

Etan feels like he did. But he did not.
Etan may have been SU’s top player for blocked shots/game though averaging 3.5 for his 4 year career here. He averaged his most, blocking 4 /game, in his junior year.

You earn playing time, you don’t bargain for it!
What part of my post led to this response? I never said you bargain for playing time. There is nothing in my post that suggests otherwise. You are not incorrect in your statement, just using my post for it.

Well, if you don't delineate between these positions, there are still skills sets that are necessary to be on the floor at the same time. And they tend to correlate to what's required of those positions.

You might not distinguish between a 3 and a 4, for instance, but at least one of them has to be able to defend bigger guys in the midrange and rebound well.

You might not distinguish between the 2 and the 3, but one (if not both) need to be able to hit a three, and handle the ball against pressure.

It's about having the right mix of skills on the floor at the same time.
