If there are no divisions in a 15 member league that plays 8 conference games, won't that create very unbalanced schedules? We will only scrap divisions if the rule about championship games is changed to allow it. 3-5-5 probably is more to the advantage of the B1G and SEC than it is for the ACC. Maybe now that they realize the ACC won't implode they'll be more amenable to changing the rule.
ND is unlikely to remain in the ACC football league after this season, so the 14-team league remains. And the 3-5-5 model works beautifully. Play your 3 rivals every year, get the other 10 teams alternate years. Every team visits your stadium every 4-year cycle. If there are no divisions in a 15 member league that plays 8 conference games, won't that create very unbalanced schedules?
Of course they won't be balanced. Look at what they came out with for this year. Even under 3-5-5, people are not going to be playing everyone every year. The only way a conference can have a totally balanced schedule is to have 10 teams or fewer. When the ACC was 9 teams, we knew that we were going to play everyone each year, 4 at home and 4 away.If there are no divisions in a 15 member league that plays 8 conference games, won't that create very unbalanced schedules?
The schedules aren’t exactly balanced right now based on the divisions. We play Clemson every season while half of the league doesn’t hahaIf there are no divisions in a 15 member league that plays 8 conference games, won't that create very unbalanced schedules?

Right, but with the 2 division winners playing for the title, it is legitimate. How would they do it with one division, based on poll rankings?Of course they won't be balanced. Two teams with the best conference game records. That's what the Big XII does now. Theoretically you can have a team that's 9-3, but 9-0 in the Big XII, as the 1st place team playing someone who's 11-1 (8-1 in the Big XII) as the 2nd place team.Right, but with the 2 division winners playing for the title, it is legitimate. They play every team in the B12. In the case of the ACC you could have teams that played entirely different schedule and not played each other end up with the same records. Two teams with the best conference game records. There has to be at least one common opponent since there would be 15 teams and there are 16 games to play. Assuming there was a way to come up with with a schedule that had just one common opponent for those 2 teams, the first tiebreaker would be how each of them did against that team. If both didn't win, that's a tiebreaker. If both won or both lost, they start going into statistics about the game to break the tie. It's very hard to believe that the stats would be identical. the last tiebreaker in all sports is a coin flip. They play every team in the B12. In the case of the ACC you could have teams that played entirely different schedule and not played each other end up with the same records.
16 teams would lead to 4 pods of 4 and the pods would rotate as division every two years so everyone gets a home and home. Pods A and B is one division, Pods C and D are the other and then after 2 years they switch around to, say, A and D as one and B and C as the other. If ND stays in, they need another team and 2 divisions.
The key to overriding that is requirement that the divisions must have an even number of teams in each. When you have 15 teams, you can't have an even number in each division. But what about the very well thought out, unchangeable-except-for-the-10-team-Big-12 rule that says you can't have a conference championship game without having 2 divisions.
Smart people made that rule, you can't just go around changing such things!

Which has always been the case.See and I think the key to overriding that requirement is to just get rid of that stupid requirement and let the conferences do what they want.
If ND doesn’t stay after this year in football, the ACC should give them the boot and add two teams, say WVU and Cincinnati. Tired of ND playing the conference.
I've said for years that Vandy makes the most sense as a 16th school in the ACC. It's a smallish private school with good academics that's a punching bag in the SEC. It has much more in common with SU, Duke, BC, ND, etc., than it has with Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, etc.My suspicion is when the dust settles, ND and Vanderbilt are ACC teams. Not sure how it all plays out but it just makes sense for all parties involved. The SEC can go and get another Florida team to round out their conference.
Honestly I love that we play Clemson every year. Outright brawl each time between the teams. I love that. The schedules aren’t exactly balanced right now based on the divisions. We play Clemson every season while half of the league doesn’t haha
Navy, West Virginia, Cincinnati are the finalists IMO if Notre Dame committed fulltime.
Navy would bring fill the Maryland hole on the map for the ACC. Bring a 6th lacrosse team, their basketball program would get a boost.
West Virginia would bring competitive sports programs and fits geography.
Cincinnati would be West Virginia without the baggage.
I believe Navy would be the first courtesy ask. But i doubt they would do it.It would be Navy. Other than Texas there is no other team ND would approve.
