from a friend, via a former player for whom they do some work. Player was at the Melo center for a practice. In the time he was there, 2 players really stood out to him:
Gillon and PC.
Was told JG had at least 5 steals and PC was making thing really difficult inside.
Player said the team is unbelievable.

I think that this team is going to be tremendous wire to wire. I like that in the different practice reports we have heard different players have stuck out to the observer. To me that says we have a lot of good pieces on this team.

That is interesting how different guys have stuck out to different observers. It's starting to remind me of the "7 starter" team in 2009-10 when any of the 7 guys could lead us on any given night. Although I think we'll be even deeper this year.

Well that's encouraging news. Gillon an Chukwu are two of the only guys I had not yet heard superlatives about. Including this report I've now heard that Howard, Gillon, Battle, White, Lydon, and Chukwu all looked great at one point or another.

I wonder if he saw the team press a lot? Gillon and Chuwkw will shine when we press; what I'm hoping is that they shine at other times as well. For what its worth, I think Gillon, Battle, and Chukwu will be three of the best pressing players we've had since we moved to zone full time.

I agree. Roberson on the inbounder Gillon, Battle, and whoever to chase people around and Chukwu to blockwu at the rim. I really hope that JB is serious about using the press regularly as a weapon this year. We have the depth and personal to pull it off and I think that it will only make the zone more effective. Full court press and 2-3 zone are such different looks defensively that I think a majority of college teams would really struggle adjusting to playing against one for 4min and then the other.

Agreed. One of my favorite moments from the Elite 8 game was when, as soon as we took the lead with about five minutes to play, we immediately snapped back into the zone. You could tell that UVA, after minutes of trying to figure out the press, was like "Wait, okay, what was the plan against the zone again?" It's a great way to fluster the opponent.

Not that the Midnight Madness scrimmage was an actual game, but I wasn't surprised to see the team that had Gillon / Battle in the backcourt beat the team that had Howard / White, because Gillon / Battle is probably the most effective backcourt combination that this team has. Love Frank, and think he's going to be a major, major, major contributor for us these next three years, but Gillon is much better offensively and an underrated facilitator.

I expect Howard to start, but it might be a bit like Triche in 2010, where the sub comes in at the first whistle. Or White who might initially start at 2 quickly shifting to 3, or being moved out of the starting backcourt altogether when Battle proves too good to keep out of the lineup.

Regardless, it is GREAT to have options. This team is a lot like the 2012 squad, with literally 8 players who could get double figures any night. Tough to prepare for that if you are the opposing coach. Sell out to take something away? Well, here are the other 6 players who are going to light you up.

Only thing I am worried about is chemistry. Talent is there. JB really needs to have a firm grasp on this. White/Gillon came here for one reason. Battle/Papa Battle know what they want/deserve in terms of pt. Lydon will hardly ever leave the floor. Robertson and Howard seem like guys that need a longer leash to avoid playing tight, and being ineffective. That is not a knock on any of them, just the realities of having a lot of talent. If we mesh, we should be able to beat everyone we face on any given night. Not at all saying we are going undefeated, just unlike last year, we CAN win every game. We weren't beating UNC last year, in almost every scenario. That won't happen in 2017.

I mentioned the same thing in my practice summary a few weeks ago. Talent / size / depth / scoring / shooting is all there. The big determinant of how this season unfolds will be how quickly the talent gels. I'm not suggesting in any way that there are chemistry issues amongst the players, just that with so many new faces it is hard to know how quickly / well things will come together, or how well this group of players compliment one another to make the whole greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Here's hoping that the F4 experience gained by the returning players rubs off and enables the new to blend with the incumbents.

Yep, they were very passive and didn't execute nearly as well as they had earlier in the game against the zone.

I've always thought that it would be great to come out in m2m, especially against teams that aren't familiar with the zone and even if our m2m isn't that good. Other team will be primed for zone, going over and over the schemes in their heads. It would take about 30 seconds against m2m for them to forget all their coaches were priming them with. Again at the start of the 2nd half.

Check the video of Gillon playing for Colorado St last season -- in SWC75's very long "preview: team". Will show you everything you need to know about Gillon's skills as a shooter & playmaker, in real games.

As for Chukwu, have we heard anything encouraging about his play on the offensive end? Probably the biggest unknown for this team heading into the exhibitions.

What I've read here on this board indicate that he is a work in progress on the offensive end. Will get some put back dunks and lobs. Hands are decent but not great. He can really run the floor.
