Here is my annual comparison of players on the SU team that recently completed its season to past players. This is based on the numbers in the SU Media Guide, (also on the SU athletic website), which date back to the 1982-83 season. The abbreviations are: m = minutes per game; p, r, a, s and b are points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks per 40 minutes of play. + = the total of those stats. Mfg, mft, to and pf are missed field goals, missed free throws, turnovers and personal fouls per 40 minutes. - = the total of those stats. NP= “Net Points”, the positives, (+) minus the negatives (-). OE = offensive efficiency, points minus mfg and mft. FG= floor game, NP – OE.

Comment: We could all see the body and talent, (and of course the pedigree), of Jerami Grant: he can score inside or facing the basket. He can rebound, blocks shots and play defense. Many people felt we were a better team when James Southerland was suspended and Jerami had a chance to start. But his numbers were unspectacular. If he evolves into the star we think he can be, he’ll be a better player than the ones on this list.

I heard a comparison to a young Hakeem Warrick. These are Hak’s freshmen numbers:
17.4m 14.0p 11.0r 1.2a 1.3s 1.4b +28.9 5.0mfg 2.4mft 2.6to 4.7pf -14.7 = 14.2NP 6.6OE 7.6FG
They are clearly better than Jerami’s.

Jerami seemed to lose interest, (certainly, production) when Southerland came back and his playing time was sharply reduced. But next year he will get a chance to start so maybe we will see the interested Jerami and he can fulfill his potential. For now the closest statistical match is Bobby Lazor who went on to become a pretty good player- for Arizona State:

I think we’d be very happy if Jerami put up those numbers here.
