10 minutes after ONE good win and a rousing celebration, there is an article being written about our coach leaving. Not one good year or two but ONE GAME! Everyone says it takes at least 3 years to get your system and players in place so if Syracuse can"t survive ONE GAME....where are we going?
This makes me sick to my stomach and ,if this actually happens, I'm not sure I can drum up the enthusiasm I've had since childhood to continue to support and invest emotionally in this program any more.

Yes we will. Look at Colorado this year. They were down for over a decade and finally made the right hire and a player in the Pac-12 South.

We will be ranked under Babers. We just need to multiple recruiting classes for his system.

I get your sentiment.

Let's face it, however, if/when we get to 7, 8 or more wins ... other schools will approach Dino. That's a given.
That said, we do have a lot in place to keep him. We all know what those things are (indoor facility, new Dome, ACC membership, strong/great AD). That's enticing.

In addition to all of that, I have to think that Dino is going to want to see what his program looks like with his own players. He'll want to reap the benefits of 3-4 years of player development/of having his own kids. He has not reached that stage yet in his career, either at EIU or BGSU.

I mean, how many cakes can you bake before you want to enjoy a piece? I think he sticks with us for 5-6 years, if not more. Note this is all conjecture on my part, but I just am not of the mindset that he is packing a box on his way homer every night.

What on earth gives you any indication that this would happen? Because one article was written by one man who has zero pulse on anything having to do with the innerworkings of Syracuse athletics?

We are in good hands all around.

Bud P is an absolute moron, and knows absolutely nothing about sports. Also, he likes to stir the pot, and has zero investment in or knowledge of SU football. Ignore him.

As a long time (and I mean long long long time) fan, Syracuse football has always been relevant to me. As to others, fans of other teams journalist know it alls, and the like, I could give a flying crap! Relevant to whom or what?

The simple answer is; Yes, we will be relevant again. It's happening right now. It's been a rough time in 'Cuse football but we are at the big table still with the funds to compete. Babers will make us relevant. I didn't have the same feeling and excitement with some of our other coaches that I do now. Don't worry about the nay sayers. It's not their fault as they don't know and are just ignorant. As someone else said, "Enjoy the ride" as the next few years will be fun. When the nay sayers come back, just smile and welcome them back. We know there's good things in store coming soon. The rest of the world will soon realize it too.

Doesn't Bud-dy boy mention Purdue in his article (never read it). So let's do the math - Purdue pays its coach $2.3 million, SU pays DFBs $2.5 million. Why would DFB go there and take a pay cut? Maybe Bud doesn't know how to use a calculator (it's not his fault). DFB ranks now around the top 50 in coaching salaries.

The issue is this - the top 25 coaching position starts at the $4 million level. If DFB proves he can get us ranked in the top 25 for most of one season and starts recruiting top 25 classes, top 25 teams or better will come knocking on his door. I expect that to happen in year 3. SU better pay up at the end of year 3 or else I'm going to.....

So this remains an interesting question despite the fact we're all excited about certain aspects of what we've seen, particularly the past couple weeks.

My feelings are these (because I don't think 'can we be relevant?' and 'will babers jump ship for another opportunity sooner than later?' are exactly the same question):

1. Babers may leave much sooner than anyone wants to believe. If this program goes the way we hope it will the next couple years he's going to be as hot a property as there is in college football coaching: Minority coach, loyal staff, school that can and will be outbid for his services, exciting offense ... Bottom line, there is absolutely a good chance he goes somewhere else let's say sometime in 2018.

2. Babers doesn't leave this year. I could be wrong but I would think even if Babers has every intent on moving to a bigger program at the first opportunity, he's going to want to handpick that opportunity. A couple good years at the Cuse would put him in a spot to pick and choose exactly what opportunity he want to pursue. I wouldn't think a 6-6 record this year puts him in that type of bargaining position.

3. Pay Babers or be prepared to lose him. This is the reality of the situation -- if we get a successful coach, we need to be willing to pay him top dollar and support him (Babers has already made a couple of statements about expanding the football staff). College football coaches are only going ot make more money with all this TV money and SU needs to either pay the man or get ready to replace him. And we, as fans, have to be OK with that and not get our feelings hurt (yes, I realize some on this board will hate him if he leaves. this is inevitable). This is a business in every way shape and form.

4. Can the Cuse be truly relevant? I'm a pessimist by nature and my tendency is to believe that northeast schools are in a rough spot. Rutgers, which had some success under Schiano and initially under flood, is poised for their worst season since potentially '02 and will be under .500 (in all likelihood) for the third time in four years; Maryland is 5-2 this year but isn't ranked, likely has three more losses ahead of them and while the record looks OK, our VT win dwarfs anything they've done to this point; BC is atrocious; We've had a long run of misery interrupted briefly by a couple solid Marrone seasons. WVU/Pitt/PSU have been better, but hte question remains as to whether a northeast team can truly be relevant in terms of being a year-in and year-out contender in the ACC, let alone the national picture. d

So my answer to this question is this: Yes, BUT ... They have to do everything right. They needed to hire a forward thinking coach (check), they need to be able to him and his staff (check, so far); they need to improve facilities and need a major step up from the current dome (check); they need more from the fan base (remains to be seen); they need to recruit better (seems to trending in the right direction); they need to get back to being a player development machine (remains to be seen) ... They need a lot of things going right and, for the firs time in a while, it seems like they have somewhat positive answers to those qeustions. But I would still say we're still a year away from really feeling like we can make the big boys sweat a matchu pwith us.
